There were many great writers in the early 1800s, such as Edgar Allen Poe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau, but each had many special qualities. These special qualities were sometimes similar throughout all of the writers, and some were very different. The main differences were split with writers such as Poe and Hawthorne, in the “Prophets of Darkness� and others were mostly “Prophets of Promise.� The main similarity between all transcendental writers in the early 1800s, is they preached the power of the individual As obviously seen just from the name, the Prophets of Darkness were often more on a negative or sad subject.
Mark Twain’s seminal novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, deserves to be included in the canon of great American literature due to its pioneering use of common speech, its daring relationship between Huck and Jim, and the moral progress made by Huck despite the failure of the ending. Its “radical autonomy” (Bollinger 32) helps define modern American literature, which makes it “one of the central documents of American culture” (Trilling 1). At this time in American history, many believed that “the mark of a truly literary product was a grandiosity and elegance not to be found in the common speech” (Trilling 6). Twain’s use of common speech and a number of dialects help the reader make connections to each character and arrive at conclusions about them. Huckleberry Finn begins, “You don’t know me without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; but that ain’t no matter” (Twain 7).
Rarely was that world projected as full of anger at racism, struggles for justice, or revolutions of the body and spirit. It's better to be cute than political, individual than collective-minded, and you should pray to be compared with Like Water for Chocolate. Now come the new books by Julia Alvarez and Demetria Martinez, both with radical themes that include criticism of U.S. policy and Anglo values. They have had flattering reviews, but profound political or social questions raised in each book go ignored: most critics seem happier with the romancing. Julia Alvarez's book is a fictionalized biography that moves its characters forward in the shadow of impending doom, yet never victimizes, never negates human complexity.
I have had struggles that have affected me profoundly. I believe Malcolm X fight with politics gave him a voice that we still hear today, not to say Benjamin Franklin did not have a lasting impression in the world, however I conceive that today’s generation could relate to Malcolm X story on a deeper understanding. Growing up and as well as an adult I also learn by reading. I gain my knowledge through reliable resources that will help me understand what I am trying to learn. In conclusion, both Benjamin Franklin and Malcolm X did not let life get in the way of knowledge.
It is difficult to decide exactly how many types of fiction there are and what kinds of fiction they are. However, most of readers will agree with the idea that there are two broad classifications which are literary and commercial fiction. The literary fiction focuses on offering intellectual stimulation and broadening understanding of the world, and of the human beings while the commercial fiction aims at satisfying expectations and needs of readers, and bringing pleasure to readers. “The Destructors” by Graham Greene is a short story that dramatizes the rebellion of a group of youths who had grown up in the post-war conditions of life, never known a reality other than war and its aftermath are against society. This drama story helps the readers to understand why a group of teen boys are against the society.

William Golding uses a character named Ralph, because he wants to show how much of an ego he is in the book. Golding does this by three ways, through Ralphs’ actions, traits, and motivations. In the novel, “Lord of the Flies”, by William Golding he proves that Ralph is an ego in the book by keeping everyone together.

From the Great American Melting Pot to Critical Thinker I chose to write about topic two because it stuck out to me the most, and defines who I have become as a reader and writer, and thinker. There is one assignment that has contributed to the way I approach writing, read writing, and critically think about situations, before I say or write something I may regret. This phenomenon occurred after reading The Great American Melting Pot, which told edited versions of our American history, and left out key minority figures that founded this land. I’m not counting how many “I”s I’ve used as I’m sure it ate a huge chunk of this paper (let alone, this sentence), but it just proves the fact that everyone has a tendency to be self-centered. I realize now that he’s right about education teaching us how to think. It takes practice to internalize a discerning view of the world. Back in high school, I remember how my classmates and I would constantly ask, “What is the point of learning factoring polynomials? It’s not like we can use this in everyday life.” His speech shed light on so much light on how to deal properly with life through being educated.
(As you can see, Hamid is quite heavy-handed with the way he names his characters. He makes his Erica-America parallel so obvious that it becomes annoying.)
