The Great Gatsby Rough Draft Author F. Scott Fitzgerald uses colors to connote larger truths about the objects he defines in his masterpieces, the Great Gatsby. Throughout the work, he constantly touches upon the relationship between the external and the internal, questioning whether the external appearance is actually representative of the inside. Color is a strong portrayal of this connection, because, in general, each color does not only exist as physical states, but actually carries its own energy. Because white becomes this accepted emblem of their wealth, they use it as a powerful tool of supremacy. When pulled over by a policeman, Gatsby, “tak[esout] a white card…”(68). First, the physical action in this circumstance is extremely important, in addition to the significance of the white color on the card. First, the card significantly originates from his wallet – the place he stores his money. He procures this card, the power, from the same place as his money. This furthers the connection between the color while, power, and wealth. The motion to flash the card is a “wave,” an easy, loose gesture that can be friendly one, but in the case, almost appears snide. In effect by this gesture, he just oppressed of the policeman and shows the policeman’s ultimate subservient social standing. Thus, Nick misleadingly describes this card, as if it were a license of power and wealth. However, this card is no “easy pass,” but actually a Christmas card that the policeman sends to Gatsby every year, proving how hard the public tries to get into the exclusive arena of the wealthy.
