Title Sickle Cell Disease and its Effect on an Individual’s Growth and Development Background Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a chronic and relatively a devastating disease. The disease is severe and may possibly result in a great deal of illnesses which results most often than not in hospitalization, as well as a shortened life span. Sickle cell disease is varied, as some patients experience few to no symptoms while others are host to multiple complications. Painful crises, lung diseases, leg ulcerations, and priapism (erect penis or clitoris does not return to its flaccid state) are common complications of the disease in Jamaica. These and other complications contribute a lot to the growth and development of these patients. Studies have shown that sickle cell disease have a significant impact on a child’s growth and development, as one study by Monika R Asnani and company sort to find the relationship between depression and loneliness in Jamaicans with sickle cell disease and how it affects them. Research problem statement Embarking in the field of health care as an athletic trainer it is crucial for individuals to not only to understand their physical limitation but try to rise above them in a healthy and practical way, therefore I have established this thesis: Sickle cell disease restraint one’s physical and social activities thus hampering an individual’s growth and development. There are many researches that links sickle cell to growth and development however it will be this researcher’s intention to clearly explain why this disease have such a significant impact on a person’s life style and also the impact it has on how others portray and socialize with these individuals.
