Dallas Dean October 1st, 2013 History 120 Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson was the third President of the United States, a founding father and author to the Declaration of Independence. He was an excellent politician and was a member of the first continental congress. He also served as a vice president to the second president John Adams. During his presidency Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase and sent Lewis and Clark to explore the west. He was a very intelligent man as well; he fluently spoke five languages and was interested in many fields of study, such as religion and science. Peter was a planter and surveyor, his mother was the daughter to a ship captain and planter. Thomas’ brother Randolph was his only brother to survive infancy, he like Thomas inherited land when their father died. His sister Lucy was the eighth of ten children and was 9 years younger than Thomas, she married her first cousin Charles Lewis. At a young age Jefferson learned Latin, French and Greek; he became fascinated by studying nature. At the age of 16 he studied at the College of William and Mary, here he met his law professor George Wythe, who has great influence on Thomas’ life. Under his professor William Small he studied mathematics, metaphysics, and philosophy. Small, also introduced Jefferson to the writings of John Locke, Francis Bacon and Isaac Newton. Early in his career Jefferson was a lawyer in Virginia, with his friend and mentor George Wythe. Jefferson’s clients were the elite families in Virginia at the time. Aside from being a lawyer he was also a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses from 1769 to 1775. This was his second time running, in 1796 he lost to his close friend John Adams, but he has enough votes from the Electoral College to become the Vice President. Jefferson took oath on March 4th, 1801; at this time the partisan strife between the two political parties was growing at an unexpecting rate and needed change. Jefferson after winning his party’s nomination ran against Aaron Burr, the election came to a tie in the Electoral College which meant the election came down to the congress. The congress didn’t want either to be president but Hamilton convinced them that Jefferson would do less damage to the country the Aaron Burr. Then in 1804 Jefferson ran for re-election, his popularity declined, mostly due to foreign affairs and wars in Europe. However Jefferson still won the election due to the other candidate being tried with treason by Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson was affiliated with the Democratic-Republican Party which is now the Republican Party. For his second term his Vice President was George Clinton, who is also a founding father and a governor of New York. Clinton also went on to be the Vice President under James Madison. There were many important events that happened during Jefferson’s eight years of presidency. One of the most important things was the Louisiana Purchase.
