Newspaper Article for Navajo Time Sexual Assault Crimes on the Navajo reservation I volunteered with Sexual Assault Nursing Examiner of Northwest, (SANE of NW). I was involved with children, adolescents, and adults in sexual abuse investigations throughout the McKinley County. I have observed with domestic violence and sexual assault programs and shelters in Shiprock and Crownpoint agencies. I have discovered that violent crime on the Navajo reservation has doubled when compared to the national average, predominantly sexual assault cases. In the Navajo culture, committing a sexual act against one's will is considered morally wrong and is an attack on the body, mind and spirit. Most of the cases never make it to court due to mishandling of the evidence or the victim drops the case because of the backlog of the tribal judicial system. Also, I found that there is little to no resource for victims to recover from the sexual trauma, such as mental health services and other outreach programs. The disruption of tribal tradition set the stage for addictions to alcohol, substance abuse, incest, violence, and sexual abuse. The sexual assault victims have a tendency to keep the assault a secret because the perpetrator is either a family member or a friend of the family. These victim suffers emotionally, and psychologically, especially if the victim is not supported by their family.
