"Literary Analysis-"I Am Joaquin" Preserving one’s cultural identity is a struggle for certain people. This can typically mean that the person would be constantly be under great scorn by others in a different society due to negative views and therefore force lose knowledge of who they are. The theme of "I Am Joaquin" by Rodolfo Gonzalez is that you should be proud of your culture because it is part of your identity and should be your duty to maintain it for yourself and others. This can be justified by how it affects the future generations, the process of revolutions, and the general resolution for other obstacles that would still remain. Sam says, “When I look back over my life, I realize that at the most critical stages, someone was there to reach me with exactly what I needed”(35). When Sam’s father divorced his mother that allowed him to venture out, and get into trouble, before he started getting into trouble his brother had introduced him to Reggie his martial arts teacher at the age of 10. So Sam had someone to look up to and teach him discipline. When Sam got into trouble remembering Reggie was a part of his life allowed him to reflect back on what he was taught, and confirmed there was a better road to travel. Although Rodriguez has had much success as a student and as a writer, he always felt misplaced among is peers. Rodriguez argues to be successful students in the classroom that they need to sever their familial and cultural ties, especially if their home lives are very different from what they experience at school. It’s funny how the two people who brought each of us into this world, same blood and genetics as us, can prohibit us from having a diverse and fun-filled life. As a child they’ve preached to us about the importance of being different; being a leader not a follower. What or who exactly would we be leading if our parents don’t give us the freedom to make mistakes or if our life is based on their perished goals. Parents believe that we shouldn’t voice our opinions towards them they consider it “talking back.” I believe that we should voice our opinions for what we believe in. They feel like we aren’t eligible to make our own decisions.
