Sunday, October sixth, Aaron and I went to Astoria Oregon to seek adventure. My eyes and ears caught interest in many things. I’m not just putting one thing that caught my interest but all the different things that did. I want to focus and find all the beauty in a place I’ve never been to. In her essay “Seeing,” Annie Dillard states, “It’s all a matter of keeping my eyes open” (109). I keep my eyes open to every place I visit because it’s impossible to predict what you might miss. There was so much beauty in what I was looking at from the tallest pine to the smallest shells. I kept looking at even smaller objects like the pieces of sand. The differences in color and shade. The last place I explore is Coffenbury lake. Many people picnicking here, families just having good times together. Walking down a trail I see a small glass with water and inside a cigarette put out. The water at this lake seems much greener than all the other water in the park. Hiking more I become aware of all the fungus. I ask Aaron what he thought of the lake and he responds, “I'm surprised to see this many types of mushroom fruiting in early October. I guess last weeks rains brought the season with them early.” This last place was my favorite because I saw so much beauty here. Being on this trip changed my perspective about observing and that I need to observe more. The more I observed on this trip the more I saw how beautiful things were and that the trip helped me improve my seeing. This act of observation helped enhance the whole adventure. Annie Dillard, states, “Seeing is of course very much a matter of verbalization” (115). This is correct and that what I observed I verbalized and wrote exactly what I
