He is almost completely shunned from the town because he is trying to help a black man accused of rape. Mayella had told Tom, “I said come here, nigger, and bust up this chiffarobe for me, I gotta nickel for you.” (p.241) She had tricked him to coming over to her. Then that’s about the time when she accuses him of rape. He had felt sorry for her, which is why he was falsely accused in the first place. Courthouse segregation was one of the biggest bits of racism I found in this book.
One of the men says “looks like we have a model citizen”. Then Rosaleen takes her can full of snuff spit and pours it all over the men’s shoes. After a small fight police show up and arrest Rosaleen and they bring Lily along with them in the car. When they get to the police station T.Ray picks Lily up and leaves Rosaleen there. When they get home T.Ray puts Lily in her room and she screams”I HATE YOU”.
By living with the DeRosier’s April was taught to hate her people, her family, but she also learned to stay strong. Living with the DeRosier’s made April fully realize that people view Métis as “second class citizens”. Living with them was what sparked her desire to be white. She even plotted that “When [she got] free of [that] place, when [she got] free from being a foster child, then [she]would live just like a real white person"(34). The DeRosier’s were also the ones who shattered her dreams of a perfect family by saying “We take you in because your parents don’t want you"(35).
Mayella Ewell, a white girl, often asked him to help her with her chores and he of course did. One time when he was helping her she kissed him but when her father saw she was embarressed and said he raped her and beat her up. The thing was she had bruises on the left side of her face but Tom was paralyzed in the left arm after he got stuck in a cotton making machine, so he could not have done it. Still the jury convicted him guilty of all charges. Its very likely that he was only found guilty because he was black.
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird the rape trail of Tom Robinson vs Mayella Ewell, an African American man accused of raping a white teenage girl was held in a bias court room of Maycomb County. Tom Robinson was proven innocent but the end verdict did not match the proof, because no jury would chose to listen to a black man over a white girl due to the state of prejudice Maycomb was under. Racism this town got to the point where when Atticus Finch, a white lawyer chose to represent Tom in the case he was a disgrace and an outcast to the white community. Not only Atticus but his children all suffered from the judgement they were receiving from the whole community for Atticus representing an innocent man. Since children were exposed to this behavior the racism has been passed down to generation to generation.
Richard’s grandmother was always excessively beating him. From the beginning, Richard would not subdue himself to the white man like the other black people around. The white people knew that he was different from other black men. Whites were scared because Richard challenged the system that they had created to insure white supremacy. They feared Richard, and some of the white people felt it necessary to act out their racist feelings in order to cover up their fear.
Professor Women Studies Date Compare and Contrast: The Secret Life of Bees In the book and the movie, The Secret Life of Bees, there are many similarities and also some differences. The book was written by Sue Monk Kidd and published by Penguin Books in 2002. The movie version came out in 2008 and had several big stars in it like Queen Latifah as August Boatwrite, Dakota Fanning as Lily, Jennifer Hudson as Rosaleen, Alicia Keys as June Boatwrite, and Sophie Okonedo as May Boatwrite. Some consistencies between the book and movie version included the death of Lily’s mother, Rosaleen’s defiant behavior, a terrible T. Ray, a loving August, a bitter June, and also the bees. A few differences were in the events after the white men took Zach, and also the level of symbolism with the bees was not as high in the movie as it was in the book.
This is racial discrimination because Ms. Lula is basically saying that they are not welcome at that church because they are white, not African American. Another example of this is Tom Robinson's trial. The jury convicted him in the rape of Mayella Ewell not because of evidence, but because of the color of his skin. I hate racism, it makes me sick. It is just pointless hatred because, they are people just like everybody else and everyone should be treated as such no matter the color of their skin.

While they unsuccessfully try to get Boo out of his house, Boo has a series of anonymous encounters with Jem and Scout. Meanwhile, Atticus, a distinguished lawyer, agrees to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell. This decision turns his children into targets of abuse from their friends and relatives. Despite Atticus’s powerful arguments for Tom’s innocence, the all-white jury convicts the black man.
Racism and prejudice inside and outside, same races, and schools still happen today. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird there was a lot of racism in and out of the schools. As we both know Tom Robinson was accused of rape from Mayella Ewell. But in the court room when the judge is speaking to Tom, we as an audience realize that he did not rape her. From her story to the scar nothing matches up to what she is saying, but because he had an all white jury, they found him guilty.
