State the title of the poem as well as the full name of the poet The poem is titled ‘Blackberry-picking’, and is written by Seamus Heaney 3. Contextualize the poem into the larger body of works (mention the larger collection title, year of publication; address a few general characteristics of the poet’s style and how this particular poem would fit into that) The poem Blackberry-Picking is a part of Seamus’ collection The Death of a Naturalist, which was published in 1966. Heaney’s poems are written in the first person and revolve around nature’s influence on the character of an individual. Heaney recalls his childhood memories to explain this influence. Blackberry-Picking has all the above listed elements, and ……. 4. Provide a brief synopsis of the poem. What is it about? The poet describes his experience of desiring blackberries. He mentions that the used to long for the month of August, the month in which blackberries start ripening. The desire for ripe blackberries is strong enough to make the poet trek through fields and pick until all the cans were full. However, that desire didn’t last long. Ultimately, the fruit ferments and tastes sour, in contrast with the sweetness of blackberries which the poet longs for. A feeling of hopelessness is felt by the poet as he realizes that the feeling of desire is fleeting, and that happiness is not permanent. 5. Identify the speaker? Is it the poet himself? How do you know? The poem is a personal anecdote. The poet describes his experience of blackberry picking to convey his main message. The poem has also been written in the first person.
