UNIT 4222-393 UNDERSTANDING SENSORY LOSS Understand the factors that impact on an individual with sensory loss 1.1 Analyse how a range of factors can impact on individuals with sensory loss. There are a range of factors that impact on individuals with sensory loss whether it be sight, hearing or both. We rely on our senses of sight and hearing to be able to carry out our day to day lives. Communication difficulties can prevent an individual from expressing their choices and needs giving them a feeling of isolation. If an individual cannot communicate effectively there becomes a danger that they won’t receive the appropriate physical and mental care; for instance if they are unable to communicate that they are in pain or are hungry or in need of personal hygiene care thus leading them to become frustrated or angry or even depressed. It is important to overcome any communication barrier to ensure the individual’s physical, emotional and social needs are met. 1.2 Analyse how society attitudes and beliefs impact on individuals with sensory lost. Societal attitudes and beliefs also have a huge impact on individuals with sensory loss, as people with any sensory loss tend to withdraw from society due to a lack in confidence and support. Other factors such as lack of information, no money or no awareness as to what they need or are entitled to can also cause problems which in many cases lead to isolation, depression and suicide. Abuse and harassment are also experienced by individuals with sensory loss, with people experiencing several forms of harassment such as mental and physical abuse, domestic violence and financial exploitation. 1.3 Explore how a range of factors, societal attitiudes and beliefs impact on service provision. Other factors and societal beliefs that have an impact on individuals with sensory loss are unemployment and
