Visual impairments can also be difficult in these situations and may affect a person’s ability to read body language, facial expressions and see gestures. Persons who have dual sensory loss will find it extremely difficult and be frustrated during day to day tasks. It can lead to loss of interests in activities and in some case may cause a person to have little or no contact with the world around them. It can have serious effects if a person misinterprets what they are being spoken to about by their family, friends and possibly medical professionals. Persons with hearing impairments would need to focus on reading lips and body language to uphold conversations just as people with visual impairments would rely on their hearing to be able to function effectively within society.

Unit 393: Understand Sensory Loss Sensory loss is an impairment of any of the senses. Without probably realising we use these senses to carry out everyday life. Sensory loss can lead to isolation and frustration for individuals who suffer with these losses. Factors may be simple things we take for granted, for example people who have difficulty hearing and seeing may not be able to enjoy watching TV, a telephone conversation, or be able to distinguish between people’s faces and so on. People’s attitudes and beliefs towards people with sensory difficulties may impact negatively on individuals as they may assume that they lack understanding; quite often it may be those who are making assumptions who are acting incorrectly in accordance with the impairment; for example, people may use a raised voice when speaking to someone with a visual impairment.
One definition of abnormality is Failure to function adequately. People with psychological disorders often experience considerable suffering and distress and a general inability to cope with their everyday activities, such as being unable to go to work or take part in social activities. So common is this failure to function among those with mental disorders, doctors are required to take this into account when diagnosing an individual with psychological problems. Common examples would be severe depression which leads to empathy and inertia, meaning that a depressed person may fail even to get up in the morning, let alone hold down a job. However, failure to function adequately is a general sign of a disorder and not itself specific to any condition.

If the people who are caring for them be it family or care worker, i they are not trained in different communication methods for example braille, makaton sign language , then the person maybe left to feel lonely, angry, they may also get agitated due to the fact they can not communicate to others their wants, needs ad feelings, this could also make the person show negative behaviour i.e. hitting them selfs or others, shouting. Information: By making sure clear, concise information is readily available n different formats; braille, large type, or spoken is essential to make sure everyone is able to understand the information that is being given. Every person will have their own needs/ methods of communication be it spoken, signed or objects such as picture cards that can be used to help them understand information.
If an individual’s communication needs are not met then all aspects of their daily life can be affected such as not being able to communicate you are well and get help. This could be more severe in the case of abuse whereby the individual can’t communicate effectively to alert others if they are being abused and can be vulnerable to abuse. The result could also put others in dangers for example if a person’s communication needs were not met and they discovered a fire they would not be able to report it quickly which would put others in danger. It would also impact other rights such as those covered by the GSCC’s codes of practice which include; diversity, equality, control, dignity, effective communication, risks, safety and security. These would be infringed because the individual would not be able to effectively communication their opinions or views in relation to these rights.
The factors may include an individual that may be having a mental disability or even suffering dementia or even not having any mental capacity. If an individual is isolated or secluded they are also vulnerable. Another factor could be for the abuser this could be due to lack of appropriate training and abusing their power of that person. Personal issues can also play a big part this could include the abuser being stressed or having to deal with history of abuse in their past.
