This quote shows how he is willing to pay any amount to save the lives of the Jew’s. Schindler’s character is contrasted with the character Amon Goeth, the commandant of the labor camp. The contrast between the two emphasizes to the audience how admirable Schindler becomes. Both men reach positions of power because of the war and have many lives at their finger tips. Goeth, after a night of drinking, eating and partying, gets out of his bed and with a smoke in his mouth, idly shoots Jew’s in the camp below who are simply going about the chores they have been assigned.
These relationships enabled him to take advantage of the German occupation program to “’Aryanize’ and ‘Germanize’ Jewish-owned and Polish-owned business…” (Crowe). In 1939 he secured a run down, bankrupt enamel factory, which he named Emalia, and was provided with Jews to serve as slave labor (Crowe; Karesh). Through his ability to charm and manipulate people, and through his various connections, he was awarded numerous contracts to supply the German military with pots and pans and kitchen accessories manufactured by his factory, and his business became extremely profitable (Vashem). It was during this time that he began to realize the seriousness of the situation and the grave danger his Jewish workers would probably be facing. He began to truly care about
It is clearly expressed throughout the movie in many different ways; however you could tell that his main priority the whole time was his family’s safety. The Sonderkommando had the pleasure of working in the crematoria and disposing of the dead bodies of their fellow inmates who had been killed for no reason. These people were in charge of killing, burning and disposing of their own kind just so they could live comfortably for the next few months until they were killed and a new group was selected. This left the men of the group in a moral grey area. In this particular case in Auschwitz, it made them conjure up a revolt and blow up a
By dropping the names of some of his Nazi friends and making a couple of threats, he was finally able to rescue the workers and escort them safely back to his factory. In early 1943 the Nazis ordered the final evacuation of the Krakow ghetto. The man put in charge of the operation was a young SS officer named Amon Goeth, the commandant of the Plaszow forced labor camp just outside the city. Jews who were healthy
In “Night” Eli Wiesel faces life and death everyday in the Nazis concentration camp. While in “A tale of two cities” by Charles Dickens, Carton saves Darnay’s life twice once during a trial and another at the guillotine even though Carton resents Darnay shows mans true potential. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” (Dickens), this famous quote can be applied to more than just the opening of A Tale of Two Cities. In this very moment there are great things going on all over the world. Things like scientific discovers and diplomatic resolutions to international problems are being done right now.
Schindler’s List Set in Poland, 1939, the time of World War II and the Holocaust, Schindler’s List tells the tale of how an ambitious businessman named Oskar Schindler, saved over a thousand Jews. Although Schindler appears like a selfish, ambitious businessman, because he is German and seems to only care for money, Schindler actually is one of the protagonists of the movie, for, he changes and helps the Jews in the end. At the beginning of the movie, the only thing Schindler cared for was himself, and his wealth. Making profit was all he thought of when hiring the Jews who were “qualified” to work at his factory. Then when a lady named Regina Perlman begs him to help her parents, saying that Schindler’s factory was a “safe haven, [that he was] good, and there aren’t any killings here”.
Such as the character Schindler, at the begging of the film he is portrayed as an arrogant, selfish and cunning war profiteer. Shown in the first scene of the film where Spielberg uses close up shots or large amount of money as well as the wealthy clothing Schindler wears representing a wealthy upper class man. When Schindler has his first meeting with Stern, Spielberg uses a two shot and positions Schindler on a chair with his feet placed on the table representing Schindler’s relaxed attitude, power and lack of respect towards the Jewish people. Later on throughout the movie Schindler and Stern start to develop a friend ship. Towards the end on the film Schindler changes his perspective of Jewish people and his attitude towards them.
Dealing on the black market, he lived in high style. In 1942 and early 1943, the Germans decimated the ghetto’s population of some 20,000 Jews through shootings and deportations. Several thousand Jews who survived the ghetto’s liquidation were taken to Plaszow, a forced labor camp run by the sadistic SS commandant Amon Leopold Goeth. Moved by the cruelties he witnessed, Schindler contrived to transfer his Jewish workers to barracks at his factory. In late summer 1944, through negotiations and bribes from his war profits, Schindler secured permission from German army and SS officers to move his workers and other endangered Jews to Bruennlitz, near his hometown of Zwittau.
These themes are the triumph of the human spirit, the difference one individual can make, and the dangerous ease of denial. This drama-film is about the journey of Schindler’s Jews (Schindlerjuden) throughout the holocaust from the year 1939 to the year 1945. This time is known as ‘one of the darkest periods in human history’ as it explores the extent Nazi’s went to in order to eliminate any ‘impure’ groups form Germany and eventually the world. These impure groups were made up of Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, and the handicapped, among others. There are no definite numbers known of people who were killed during the time but it was estimated 6 million perished during these horrific 6 years.
World War II was remembered well for the Holocaust, an event in history where millions of people (mostly people of the Judaist religion) were massacred due to one man’s irrational hatred and desire for “perfection”. Despite being the most horrendous event in history, several important things were established that benefitted society if not the world as a whole: The United Nations, the creation of Israel, and many Human Rights Laws. The United Nations is a very important organization resulting from World War II and the Holocaust. The United Nations unified the governments of most countries in the world as well as their people. The United Nations keeps the peace and allows us to punish those whom cause chaos, terror, and civil unrest.
