The role of religion in Bama's Sangati Events by Holmstrom with Viramma: Life of an Untouchable by Josiane and Jean Luc Racine is prevalent in both novels. Hinduism and Christianity are two religions that have been around for thousands of years. These religions have developed philosophies on certain subjects that can be compared in order to show their similarities and differences. Some of the main subjects that can be reflected upon after learning of the history and fundamentals of these religions are the paths to enlightenment or salvation, and the religions' treatment of women. More than a religion, Hinduism is a way of life and a philosophy that is most concerned with spirituality and enlightenment. The idealism of the Hindu religion comes from the Vedas, which are the Hindu religion's oldest scriptures and are considered to be a direct revelation of God. Christianity is more diverse and complicated in its beliefs and totally depends on faith. In contrast, Hinduism is a belief more based on the simplicity of culture and tradition. My goal in this paper is to compare the experiences of Viramma and Bama with respect to religious and spiritual influence in their respective villages. According to Hinduism, a marriage between two persons is a sacred relationship that is not limited to this life alone. It extends across seven or more lives, during which the couple help each other progress spiritually. The adage that marriages are made in heaven is very much true in case of Hinduism. Two souls come together and marry because their karmas are intertwined and they have to resolve many things together upon earth in order to ensure their mutual salvation. Viramma certainly didn’t feel that her marriage, was a scared one at her very young age, she wanted to be free and play with the other children.
