Field Education Journal #1 This week has been a fascinating week of social work direct practice. My field placement site is imbued with appropriate cases and intervention opportunities to enhance my field education. I am in the constant practice of observing and reaching out to those opportunities and situations that may contribute to my personal development as a social worker. On Tuesday February 14, 2012, I arrived at my placement site and proceeded to my office or designated workspace to commence my day of field service. I had previously made and appointment to meet one of my clients to get an update of his activities from our last meeting and to also to conduct an assessment of the intervention process relating to his general situation. As I was in the process of settling down, I was interrupted by another client of mine who had a disagreement with the result from his room inspection conducted on the previous Thursday. My placement site is a traditional housing facility for Veterans and room inspection is a routine procedure to ensure a comfortable and conducive living environment. He explained that the cigarette scent came from his clothes that he had planned to wash the following day and not from smoking in his room. I immediately, affirmed that it was a justifiable explanation. I immediately paged the case manager that did the inspection and asked her to come to my office. She later came and then I informed her of my client’s concern and his explanation for the cigarette scent in his room. I further explain to my client that she had no knowledge of the source of the scent, but provided a vivid report of what was observed during her inspection and that any other person would have provided the some conclusion. I commended him for immediately providing an explanation and then asked the case manager to revise her notation to indicate that the scent came from the
