Salvation for the Human Condition: Transgenic Animals Innovations in molecular biology are happening at a rapid rate. One of these breakthroughs is the ability to engineer transgenic animals. Transgenic animals are animals that carry specific genes from other species. This astounding technology has already produced transgenic creatures such as mice, rats, sheep and cows. Although, there are many ethical issues surrounding transgenesis, these genetically altered animals are used to improve the human condition and thwart disease. What is a transgenic animal? A transgenic animal is an animal that carries a foreign gene that has been deliberately inserted into its DNA. By using the recombinant DNA methodology, the foreign gene is constructed, thus creating an animal with an enhanced gene structure suited for a specific purpose. With this supplementary gene, the “DNA of the host and [can be] be expressed correctly by the cells of the host” (Oriens, 102). Some transgenic animals are produced for specific pecuniary traits. For instance, transgenic sheep and goats have been created to have an increase of proteins in their milk and to produce more wool. The majority of transgenic animals produced so far are mice, the animal that provided a gateway for this technology. After the successful transgenesis of this animal, it was followed a few years later; by other animals such as rabbits, pigs, sheep and cattle. Why are these animals being produced? Transgenic animals are useful disease prototypes and producers of substances for human welfare. The genetically altered animals are produced as disease models, which are animals genetically manipulated to exhibit disease symptoms so that effective treatment can be studied and even grow human organs such as ears. There is a strong possibility that due to this new innovation that within 10 years a cure for cancer
