When Love and Hate Conquers… ‘Love and Hate’ is the best theme possible for the beautiful piece of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. W. Shakespeare wrote this piece to show what love can do to anyone and to show the inevitable effects of hate that might ruin a human life. Love is represented in the tale by the sacrifices as well as the sufferings of Romeo and Juliet, while Hate is signified by the feud between the Montague family and Capulet Family. Love, as defined by the Oxford Dictionary, is “a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person.” Love is split up into costs and benefits. Benefits is defined as” something that is advantageous or good; an advantage” This is how we usually think of love.
Next, the threats Tybalt sends Romeo also lead up to the suicides and the cause of death. Tybalt approaches Romeo and tries to start a fight by saying, “Romeo the love I bear thee can afford no better term than this: thou art a villain” (119). The constant threats Tybalt sends Romeo endanger his own family. Romeo was told if a family member of his or himself gets in Tybalt swore to himself that he would seek revenge on Romeo for crashing the party. Tybalt’s threats eventually become a full out issue for Romeo.
Romeo and Juliet are certainly in love due to the events that take place because of their love. Romeo and Juliet's love exposes itself through their commitments to each other and themselves, the sacrifices they make, and their emotions that coexist with love. The commitments that Romeo and Juliet make are made through love. They both have to grow up and “Growing up requires that they seperate themselves from their parents by forming with a member of the opposite sex an intimate bond wich supersedes filial bonds” (Goldberg 84). Their Marriage is an excellent example of this.
This is similar to Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights. Emily published her novel during the Victorian time where women also married for “higher power, political reasons and wealth “. Both novels Romeo and Juliet are similar due to the fact that their main story lines are based on love and tragedy. However both tales are full of such powerful emotions as well as one of them being love. They both have a lot in common such as the forbidden love between two star- crossed lovers, also most characters from both novels share common roles and similar emotions such as the tragic loss of some of the characters for example when Romeo thinks that he has lost his beloved Juliet or when Heathcliff loses Cathy.
Once Tybalt approaches, Mercutio says “O calm dishonourable, vile submission/ Alla stoccata carries it away. (draws his sword)/ Tybalt, you ratcatcher, will you walk?” (3.4. 43-46). This shows that Mercutio gave an illogical reply by fighting with Tybalt. In addition, it caused severe conflict when Mercutio’s death angered Romeo.
This creates the impression that Romeo is saying that he couldn’t live without her. Moreover it creates emotional attachment towards the characters as we learn how they truly love each other. Another example of this is when Romeo says ‘The brightness of her cheeks would shame those stars’. In addition, it also conveys the theme of youth. Romeo falls in love with Juliet after seeing her for the first time.
One story is what we would call “Romance Literature” and the other one is more “Realism”, in one the characters names are given and the other they just go by “the husband” and “the wife.” The way both male characters express their feeling or love to their wives is completely different from each other, although they both do love them like crazy. The story by van der Zee is romance literature because of the intimate scenes and it has a happy ending, because Faye lives happily ever after with the love of her life “Kai”, after all they have been through. I believe the name Faye is a very pretty name and that has something to do why van der Zee used it in a romance story. Unlike A Secret Sorrow, in A Sorrowful Woman the characters names are not given and there are no scenes were “the husband” and “the wife” are intimate. In this story the wife seems to not be happy with her family and ends up dying at the end.
In “Romeo and Juliet”, love’s power of influence is a constant strength and source of courage. Throughout the play, the protagonists fight against the present society and counter their family’s wishes in order to follow their desires and make of two star crossed lovers one. They are both willing to abandon their names for each other “Deny thy father and refuse thy name, or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and I’ll no longer be a Capulet”. This shows that love in Shakespearean literature overcomes and supersedes their reputation, loyalty towards their names and is basically the only key to happiness. This forcefulness of love becomes so strong and intense that it turns to violence and hatred for all obstacles blocking their reunion.
Shakespeare’s plays have often been acclaimed for his representation of the human condition. The play Othello focuses on relationships; between lovers, friends, masters and their servants, and enthralls the responder to express ideas of human nature. The intense relationship of Desdemona and Othello, and its ultimate destruction, is a centerpiece throughout the play that mirrors the downfall of Othello himself. This relationship exposes Othello’s weakness and its passionate nature is manipulated by Iago as a weapon to be used against the hero. The marriage between Desdemona and Othello is racked with controversy.
