Tanya Smith Dr. Joseph English 1302 15 June 2009 Struggles [thesis] To contend resolutely with a task or problem is to struggle. In both the stories “A&P” and “Gryphon” both of the main characters Sammy and Tommy struggle against rules, authority figures, and social systems. The story “A&P” takes place in a small town in 1961. Sammy, the main character is dealing with different types of struggles. The first contains struggles against rules which is the three girls walking in dressed inappropriately at the supermarket, “A & P“.
The car she is driving, some old blue bomb, is abandoned outside the drug testing office. She’s walking several miles a day to the drug court office because people who are unemployed or not in school have to put in hours cleaning up the place. Finally, in July 2006, Dawn uses drugs and knows she will get caught. She makes up a half-hearted story but, truly, she’s tired. Tired of being a failure.
Imagine pulling into the parking lot of Walmart. Its a really busy day and the lot is almost full, but wait you see a spot, so you go racing over to get it before someone else can. Start to pull in but you cant because someone was to lazy to put the shopping cart up. So now i have to get out of my car to move the cart. I cant stand for shopping carts to be left in the parking lot.
He seems to be surrounded by these characters bound to their boring lives. Sammy uses different names to describe the people he sees in his conformist town. He calls the customers in the store “sheep”, (Updike, 20) because of how blindly they follow their usual routine and “houseslaves”, (Updike, 20) are what he calls the house wives with pin curlers puttering around the store. He goes on to say that the customers are so enveloped in their grey lives that if someone were to set off a bomb in the center of the store that they would fail to even notice. One customer, “the witch”, (Updike, 18) as Sammy calls her, is described as a serious looking woman one who diligently watches the register he is on, eagerly waiting for him to slip up and make an error.
Later at the checkout isle, Mother noticed that I was holding a huge Hersey’s candy bar bigger than my head. I had grabbed it in my fall from the plummet of Mount Everest. At that moment, the Publix manager walk up behind the cashier and informed us that she would let me have it for free, which in the end, made me feel like I had been handed a million dollars. To prevent this incident from ever happening again, Mother bought a dog leash from the animal isle. From that moment on, before I ever set foot into a store, Mother would loop the dog leash around my waist and hold the other end.
Such as the violations of labor laws and gender discrimination, and taking out smaller businesses wherever they set up. One of the negative reasons to Wal-Mart would be its violation of the federal Robinson-Patman Act and any similar state law which is a law that prohibits price discrimination, as to most of its purchases of inventory, which drives many lawful and law-abiding local businesses out of business, which enables Wal-mart to lower its costs and sell at lower prices, all at the expense of its local competitors and the people who Wal-mart make their purchases from. Another reason that adds to the negatives of Wal-mart is that it's in violation of the federal and state wage and labor laws requiring Wal-Mart to pay overtime to its employees called "Associates" by Wal-Mart which enables Wal-Mart to lower its costs and sell at lower prices all at the expense of its local employees and their families. Wal-mart also allegedly uses unlawful tactics to prevent its employees from forming unions in violation of the federal Taft-Hartley Labor Relations Act and various state statutes.
348) In a way to make sure unions do not come into Wal-Mart the have interrogated workers, confiscated union literature, and fired union supported all in violation of the law. She also talks about how Wal-Mart has a team of union busters sent from their headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. Sammy observes the patrons of A&P mundanely going about their shopping, like “sheep pushing their carts down the aisle” (6). He continues to belittle the customers by stating, “I bet you could set off dynamite in an A&P and the people would by and large keep reaching and checking oatmeal off their lists” (6), as if they are not thinking about what they are doing because they have done it so many times before. The narrator explains the dullness of the store by pointing out the “fluorescent lights” and “checkerboard green-and cream rubber-tile floor” (7). Finally, Sammy states, “The store’s pretty empty, it being a Thursday afternoon, so there was nothing much to do” (12), indicating everyone works a typical nine-to-five shift and only older, retired people are at the store on a Thursday afternoon. Sammy observes the girls breaking the normal routine practiced by other shoppers.

The small hometown discount store has evolved from a small local chain to an international phenomenon now serving over 200 million customers weekly from over 8,000 facilities in 15 different countries (Ferrell, 2013, p.328). The fast growing success of Walmart can be attributed to Sam Walton’s firm belief in customer satisfaction and hard work (Ferrell, 2013, p.328).
