Ford Motor Company Wendy A. Putnam Business Management Bus302024VA16-1116 Charles Smith July 24, 2011 The case creates four options to choose from. Discuss at least three criteria the company should use to decide which of the four listed options is best and the reasons why each criterion should be used. The criteria that needs to be discussed, is among other things, where the company is losing the most money. Before any decisions can be made on where trimming needs to begin, management must first find out where the loss is the greatest and figure out the areas that need to be downsized first. By restructuring and closing and re-tooling some North American plants, Ford was able to focus on the Ford brands and cut back on the other brands at all levels and increased efficiency in Ford's four main pillars of their organization, fuel efficiency, quality, safety and value. Ford continued to invest in the top Research and Development efforts in order to bring the highest quality products to their consumers for an affordable price. Ford not only is trying to make their employees jobs easier but also to meet the needs o their customers and world wide markets. With the high cost of union workers, Ford also had to look at the implications of letting workers go. What would the cost be to the company to buy our union workers, were they prepared to deal with possible strikes and negative coverage? When Ford realized that they were going to have to make job cuts, they were proactive in notifying the workers in advance and offered settlements that helped the employees through the transition of going from being employed to being unemployed. Ford was able take into consideration the needs of the people that it most affected by this change and made the change manageable.
