Taking Sides: Is Bigger Government Better Government? Introduction to American Politics, Professor J. Carter Written by Adam Raymond In “Taking Sides, Issue 3”, humanities professor Jeff Madrick surveyed the numerous government interventions in the economy since the end of World War II and concluded that they have been essential to America's growth and well being. ““Bigger government could create more jobs and more money in additional sales, and has also had a positive effect on the education system.” Madrick continues: “Better education leads to less crime, less need for special education programs, and less need for welfare.” Madrick believes that government regulation can “make economies work better...reduce corruption, monopolistic pricing...[they] can temper financial speculation which distorts the flow of capital toward inefficient uses” (p.42). “When done well, regulation keeps competition honest and free, enables customers to know and understand the products they receive, and foster new ideas” (p.43).” Madrick continues to summarize many other points, stating, “Government is needed to make some things a standard across the board”, such as public water system, railroads, and the highway system. He continues by stating the National Institute of Health has been expanded due to government backing that “accounted for high proportion of medical breakthroughs.” He further illustrates this point citing the Department of Defense, and how Federal money in the 1960s eventually helped create things like the internet.
Can We Make America Smarter? In the article, “Can We Make America Smarter?” by Andrew Hacker, the author discusses how higher education has increased and how other authors think how education has increased in America and how necessary or unnecessary getting a higher education is in the work force. Hacker discusses how Goldin and Katz believe that the United States has become “the world’s most educated nation.” Also how America started to emphasize education as a way to achieve wealth. They also believed that people need to be educated in order to be able to advance in technology and that higher education is needed. Goldin and Katz state that getting a higher level in education versus those how do not, their salary income increase.
He also wanted to deregulate state and federal government requirements and liberate business and allow capitalism to flourish making people more prosperous and enabling them to pay more taxes, decreasing federal deficit. He also wanted to strengthen the nation’s defences. It can be argues that reaganomics was not successful in the years 1981 – 89 but it depends on who you ask, the democrats would say it didn’t work where republicans would say it did work. After the Great Depression the consensus was that the government’s main target should be to maintain a low level of unemployment. But the reaganites said that the low unemployment obsession had pushed up public expenditure and led to budget deficits and stagflation and they believed in supply side economics which emphasised growth.
Country need a strong, bold leader to take charge and lead our nation in the correct direction and president is that leader. The president is a person who should make decisions that will better our country for the future. In chapter 9, Fineman discusses the effects of the presidential power. He
Because of their embrace of innovation, entrepreneurs help lift all parts of the American economy. WHAT DO ENTREPRENEURS DO? Above all, entrepreneurs see opportunity in ever-accelerating global change. The communications sector provides a perfect example of the dizzying pace of change. Radio took 38 years to reach 50 million listeners; it will take the Internet just five years to reach 50 million users.
Americans will save a lot of money from taxes, the prison population would decrease, and the government would realize how harsh and unfair their sentencing system is. Americans would much rather old drug dealers who want to improve and change their lives back on the streets rather than having a murder or a rapist back on the streets. If the drug dealers really want to change their lives and start a new life then they should be able to get out of prison. Most of the inmates have already served more than enough time then they actually deserve. Americans need to start sticking up for what’s right in their country and should stop being bullied by the government.
By the time someone of my generation steps in and becomes president, the economy will be in full affect. This generation has so many bright and intelligent people who already have plans to better the world around us. We will bring this world to peace and give Americans that security that they have lost over the years. It will be very difficult, but with great effort and hard work it can be achieved. The future of America is a bit foggy to some, but to others it is clear that our country will come back and once again be a dominant nation.
Even though the prices will lower of time, companies will take advantage of the recession, knowing that consumers still require their goods, no matter if it falls outside their budget or not. It is the government and consumer’s responsibility to overcome the “stickiness” of the prices via certain stimulations. Essentially the government will directly, or indirectly, create opportunities for work for its unemployed citizens, therefore increasing consumer incomes to a point where they will match a compromise price level. This, in turn, will cause the demand for goods to go up which will decrease the price temporarily. The economy is not run by a single entity, which means that it is the individual or individuals that are driving our economy.
It is also necessary to allow foreign products to come in so competition will increase. Basic ally, the underlying flaw under foreign product taxes is that it cuts off greater innovations and negatively affects our economy. -Even if we wanted to improve, remove taxes b/c by imposing taxes we don’t accept new ideas into our companies and nothing is innovative anymore. We are promoting isolationism -By allowing foreign products to come in, competition is brought about and we work to improve upon it. Each side improves the product and it continues in a circle.
