The Rwandan Genocide The Rwandan genocide officially began on April 6, 1994, when a plane carrying President Habyarimana, a Hutu, was shot down. The Rwandan population consisted of three different ethnic groups, the: Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa. After the plane carrying President Habyarimana was shot down, violence started almost immediately. Hutu extremist who blamed the killing of the president on the entire Tutsi race mainly led the Genocide. (United) Hutu extremists launched their plans to destroy the entire Tutsi civilian population. Political leaders who might have been able to take charge of the situation and other high profile opponents of the Hutu extremist plans were killed immediately. The RPF were military trained Tutsis who had fled to Uganda back in 1959 during the riots. The way that the RPF took over Rwanda was by first entering the country, and then slowly taking over it and its government. In conclusion the Rwandan Genocide was a mass killing spree mainly led by the Hutu to completely kill out the Tutsis ethnic group.
