October 11, 2011 President Obama President White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington DC 20500 Dear Mr. President, As you will see in my letter, I am concerned with how kids would react to longer school years. I’m sure most would not be happy about the thought of that, but there would be some Grade-A students out there that would love this, because it would be able to increase their education and learning skills. But throughout my letter I am just going to suggest some ways for you and Congress to help or possibly change some things about the school years. Sincerely, ****** ******* To me, by extending school days and years, I feel like the education would not increase for all students and schools. Just the ones that really strive for it and want a better education. However, there are a lot of students out there that want a good education to be able to get a good-paying job after high school and college. But at the same time, there are students who just want to do what they have to and no more, by that I mean they just want to graduate with passing grades and possibly go to college. But overall, I feel that it would not completely increase education levels of all schools. Noemi Donoso, the new Chicago Public School’s chief education officer, said “Just extending a school day doesn’t mean, by itself, that you’re going to have high-performing schools. It’s not going to be simple.” (Noemi Donoso from the New York Times). According to Arne Duncan, the Cabinet secretary, who was charged with overhauling America’s educational system, feels that longer school day, weeks, and years would help for the positive. CNN Politics quoted him saying, “Where students have longer days, longer weeks, longer years – that’s making a difference.” So as you can see, he feels that longer school terms, would change for the positive.
