Social media in the multiple forms of Facebook, texting, and emailing is taking the place of face-to-face interactions because some people are relying more on digital technology to build their relationships. People are using mostly digital communication instead of face-to-face interactions because we can be there instantaneously and it is convenient. For example McCoy states in “Effective Business Writing and Communication” that “the number of text messages sent everyday exceeds the population of the planet.” This is reiterating that some people are communicating more often by using the social media tools that have currently been provided. While most people argue that social technology is ruining or damaging friendships, this paper argues that digital technology is increasing the amount of communication we do, and changing the way we do it. Digital technology is creating new ways and levels of how we connect with each other. The type of social media this paper focuses on is Facebook, texting, and emailing, with a heavier emphasis on Facebook because of its usage. Facebook is a form of social communication that originated for college students only, but has become mainstream for everyone to access. Facebook allows people to interact socially via the internet. Unlike other forms of social interacting, Facebook provides multiple tools that one can utilize, but can have consequences. Texting, which is another form of social networking, can be defined as using a cell phone or smart phone (connected to cyberspace) using a keypad to type out messages and then send them. Emailing is social technology’s form of communication where people write notes, letters, or correspondence and that information is sent via the cyberspace.
