NT1310 Unit 1 Assignment 1 Voice Vs. Data Cell phones- are portable phones that are connected to a cellular network that utilize radio waves for transmission. These phones are battery powered. They also support other types of transmissions such as text messaging and emails. Cellphones operate on both voice and data networks. Landline phones- are phones that use metal wires for transmission. Their power source is derived from electricity. They are very dependable and problems are more easily fixed in comparison to other networks. Landline phones utilize voice networks. SMS/Text Messaging- is the act of composing and forwarding electronic messages between hand held devices. The first text message was sent on December 3, 1992 by Neil Papworth, via a computer keyboard. The message read “Merry Christmas.” Text messages are forwarded using data networks. Fax Machine- is a device that sends and receives pictures and text. It utilizes a scanner to transmit the information as electronic signals. These electronic signals are transmitted to phone numbers linked with some type of printer. Fax machines use data networks. Pagers- are wireless communication devices that are designed to receive messages. Originally, the message transmitted to the recipient was the telephone number of the sender basically requesting a call back. Soon after, two way pagers where developed. They allow an interactive system of communication between the sender and receiver. Pagers operate on a data network. VOIP phones- voice over internet protocol is a technology that allows phone calls to be made through the internet. An advantage of this system is that there is no additional charge for phone calls beyond the charge for the internet through its service provider. VOIP uses a data network.
