Case Study – Relationship of Data and Information Lee Tirona University of Phoenix HCI/520 Data Management and Design Steve Fowler February 28, 2011 Case Study – Relationship of Data and Information Data and information are frequently used in our daily lives. Both are types of knowledge and there are many differences between data and information. It is the lowest abstract or raw input but when processed makes meaningful output. It represents quantitative and qualitative attributes relating to variables. Processed data are information. Information is knowledge or set of instructions. Data is a meaning form of information. Data can be numbers, characters, symbols, or pictures. Information provide answers to questions, like who, which, when, why, what and how. Data has no significance when it exists in the raw form but when it is collected or organized into something meaningful, it increases importance. This meaningful organization is information. Data is often obtained as a result of recordings or observations. When data is to be converted into meaningful information, the collected data are analyzed and a conclusion about the collected data is arrived at. Therefore, information obtained is a result of analysis, communication, or investigation. In this case study, the health informatics professional must create a database model for patient’s personal information. Often times, a patient must provide information such as family medical history, medical problems and medications taken when seeing their providers. If this information is readily available through an electronic database, the patient will not have to repeatedly provide this information over and over again.
