While both the men are exceptionally wealthy they came into money very differently. Gatsby had to lie and cheat for his money in his later years of his life and Tom was born into prosperity. Tom makes it very clear to Gatsby in the novel that wealth is “in his blood,” causing Gatsby to work even harder to win back Daisy. Gatsby is a very friendly and
In this novel by Fitzgerald, Gatsby's dreams for life are discussed. Jay Gatsby has a aspiration to be a rich person. When he was young, he was never at ease with what he had. He wanted money, so he managed to get it by doing many things. Gatsby fought in World War I. Gatsby was very wealthy at this time, but he still was not pleased because he desired more and more.
Charles Foster Kane, publisher of the New York inquirer and numerous other papers, and one of the richest men in the world, influenced America’s thinking for half a century. However, Kane is flawed, self-serving, destructive opportunist, a classic tragic figure doomed to fall. Because he had lots of money, Kane believed he could buy anything including the friendship and love. Message is simple: success, power, riches cannot replace love and tranquility. Many people walked out on Kane’s life: first wife Emily, the best friend Leland, and second wife Susan.
To do this, he needs to become wealthy to suit her East Egg lifestyle. Most people assume that Gatsby was into shady business because a lot of “the newly rich are just big bootleggers” (Gatsby 107). With his new fortune, Gatsby buys a mansion on the water “so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (Gatsby 78). When Gatsby and Daisy are reunited for the first time in five years, Gatsby is ecstatic. Gatsby dreams that he will “fix everything to the way it was before” (Gatsby 110).
This gives him a challenge, a challenge more difficult than most because of her high position in the social status. Not only falling in love with her for her looks, being tied into By having daisy all to himself, Gatsby has won the biggest
This type of love tends to occur in those with low self-esteem and those who gain confidence in pleasing their love interest. Mania and agape love are similar in that they both have the ability to develop into a very intense and unhealthy relationship for both parties. In both instances the parties involved have the ability to lose their sense of reality. The styles of love that have been most prevalent in my life are logical love called pragma, and friendship love called storge or philia. A love that develops from a friendship usually prevents a lot of disappointments because you already know a lot about that person.
Rather, The American Dream should be defined as an opportunity to pursue happiness. In order to pursue that happiness, you would need money, potential, or talent, or even all three in order to be successful. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and the movie Good Will Hunting, screenplay by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, both show examples of people trying to achieve the American Dream. In The Great Gatsby, we are introduced to a man named Gatsby who tries to tie money and success together to find the woman he loves the most, Daisy. Gatsby always held huge parties on weekends to try and impress Daisy, hoping that she’d remember him years later.
Gatsby fell in love with Daisy almost immediately after meeting her. Gatsby was attracted to Daisy's wealth and charm. He lied to Daisy about his past in an attempt to convince Daisy he deserved a girl like her. Daisy and Gatsby's love got cut short by Gatsby having to serve in the war. While Gatsby was in the war, Daisy married a man named Tom Buchanan a wealthy man.
I can’t help what’s past.’ She began to sob helplessly. ‘I did love him once — but I loved you too.’” (140) Gatsby expects that Daisy will be happy to leave Tom behind and break off her marriage with him. Gatsby's dream has been to build a fortune and reclaim the love that he once lost because, as he sees it, he was too poor for Daisy when they first met. This proves my claim because this displays, in Daisy’s words, that Gatsby did expect too much, he expected for her to make a big deal in front of Tom. This proves my thesis because we can see that he expects a lot of Daisy.
The Drive behind the success of both Gatsby and Fitzgerald is love. “her voice full of money”(Fitzgerald) Gatsby and Fitzgerald fell in love with upper class woman that they would never be good enough for; they understood that their good looks and charm might be good enough for a while but they needed money to be with the woman they loved. The first thing Fitzgerald did after coming into money and success was marry his love. After acclaiming much wealth Gatsby as well persuade his love. “They were careless people.
