Rehabilitation Paper Daniel Herrera University of Phoenix CJA/234 - INTRODUCTION TO CORRECTIONS Instructor: ROBERT BENNETT October 20th, 2014 Rehabilitation in the United States has been the way that our courts have attempted to free up space and to teach the inmates the way they should act for a long while now. In this paper, the history and definition of rehabilitation will be defined and briefly mentioned. The definition of parole will be discussed as well as how it differs from mandatory release. The definition of probation and community corrections will also be mentioned in this essay. As in everything in life there is always room that something can be changed to make it better, and the idea of rehabilitation is no different. Rehabilitation is a very useful tool utilized by the court. According to The Free Dictionary (2014), rehabilitation is the process of preparing a prisoner for a productive life upon release from prison. So what this means the prisoner receives classes and special treatment to ensure that they can live a proper life once they are given their second chance into society. The process of rehabilitation will begin in prison and will continue once the inmate is released into society. Rehabilitation started in the late 18th century in which rehabilitation occurred in a barbaric way in torture chambers and dungeons (“Prison Rehabilitation”, n.d.). Rehabilitation in the past was focused on reforming the individual and not focused on preventing the inmates from breaking the law again. Rehabilitation has since changed and focused on preventing the individual from committing a crime against laws and also on teaching these inmates how to act properly in society. Rehabilitation is now the focus of our corrections system and every day new things are being done to ensure the system is getting better and improving the inmates as a whole.
