It starts off with the youth whom become adults and constantly keep returning to jail then they end up in prison. In the future corrections department need to work on ways that can help prisoners when they are released from prison on who to deal with society. Corrections need some type of program that can help and get the inmates the proper help they need to get out of jail and find jobs and how to reenter the world. But in order for the correctional officers to know how to treat inmates properly they need the proper training, so that they can make sure they are not mistreating inmates that will cause there facilities to be sued by the inmate. In the future of corrections is about reforming the inmates and getting them the most proper care that they need.
“When I was sent of errands, I always took my book with me, and by going one part of my errand quickly, I found time to get a lesson before my return” (Douglass, pg 115). This passage shows that even though his mistress stopped his education, he persisted in becoming literate. Malcolm X was a public speaker and a civil rights activist in the 1900s. Even though he went to school, education for African-Americans at the time could hardly be counted as one compared to education for white people. In his autobiography, he writes about his time in prison.
Corrections Accreditation and Privatization LaWanda Blake CJS/230 January 7, 2012 Gerald Norris Corrections accreditation is a system of verification that correctional agencies and facilities comply with under the national standards as declared by the American Correctional Association. Privatization creates competition with the public prisons and jails within the community, which then acts as an encouragement for the public prisons and jails to make needed improvements. As accreditation and privatization effects jails and prisons in the country, accreditation also affects the professional development of privatization within the state and federal prison systems and how well privatized prisons meet correctional criteria. The correctional administration has become very familiar with accreditation and professionalization. Foster (2006) says, “Professionalization has to do with gaining professional status for persons working in corrections, while accreditation seeks comparable status for their employing organizations.” Millions of people work within the corrections systems some working in non-secured areas such as probation and parole officers nevertheless some form of professionalism must be maintained.
The residential community corrections traditionally was to help the inmates who were soon to be on parole reintegrate back into society, by finding jobs, saving money, getting an apartment and getting clothes for the job. It has expanded by now being a direct-sentencing option that judges can give to certain offenders who need an alternative that is between a stay in prison and traditional probation. The effectiveness of this program isn’t that great, with evaluations results that clients were more than likely to be arrested. One reason for the failure was there was an overwhelming amount of inmates were placed in the treatment which meant that many of the clients there were
It also makes prison life more enjoyable for the prisoner which lowers the risk of re offending whilst in prison. Another aspect of security which is an advantage to both staff and prisoners is dynamic Security. Prison officers monitor the prisoners to ensure that they are coping with life in prison. This lowers the risk of self-harming and suicide. A downside to security within a custodial environment is the cost of the security devices used such as the CCTV, thumb detection devices to access keys, key swab operated gates into every part of the prison from the reception to the wings to the visiting area.
The IEP scheme (Incentives and Earned Privileges) is regularly updated and changed for the benefit of the prisoner, it is there to help the reformation and to stop the prisoners from re-offending. It is the fair and just allocation of sanctions and rewards, It enables people to move through defined levels in order to: • encourage responsible behaviour by prisoners • encourage effort and achievement in work and other constructive activity by prisoners • encourage sentenced prisoners to engage in sentence planning and benefit from activities designed to reduce re-offending • create a more disciplined, better-controlled and safer environment for prisoners and staff. These aims are achieved by ensuring that privileges above the minimum are earned by prisoners through good behaviour and are removed if they fail to maintain the acceptable standards. There are 3 levels - basic, standard and enhanced. Prisoners were assigned onto these levels according to staff reports on their behaviour.
Another program, this one in St. Louis, Missouri, works with incarcerated youth using just performing arts. (http://www.prisonartsstl.org/projects.htm). √The financial and societal savings of providing an inmate higher education are enormous. Upon an inmate’s release, the cost-benefit of reducing recidivism will begin to be realized immediately. If we consider the additional benefit of this individual obtaining work, paying taxes, and contributing to the general economy, and the prevention of costs to victims of crime and the criminal justice system the benefits are significantly greater (Sherman). √The educational level of a parent is a clear predictor of both the educational achievements of a child and the level of a parental involvement in a child’s education. As the majority of prisoners are parents, the education of adults in prison can have a positive and long-lasting impact upon the lives of their children (Brown).
