She thought that was the best idea and would tell me all of the wonderful things nurses would do. Naturally I lo e helping people and as a child I knew that grandma also knew. We would play pretend and I was always the nurse and she was always my patient. So even from a very young age I have been told and encouraged to grow and do wonderful things with my life and if being a nurse is what I wanted then that’s what I could be. Hek et al (1996) suggested that research is essential in nursing and is part of the evidence based practice in healthcare settings. Evidence-based practice (EBP) adapted from Sackett et al (1996) states that EBP is: "The conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. The practice of evidence-based medicine means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research" The whole purpose of EBP is to use available research to inform practice and as a result of good judgement by health care professionals to ensure we do what is best for our patients.
