1.1 Explain what is meant by reflective practice Reflection is a process that one replays an experience over in their mind and they actively and carefully evaluate it. It is suggested that reflection involves three aspects; returning to the experience in your mind, connecting to feelings (helpful ones to be used, unhelpful to be removed or contained) and evaluating and re-examining through the eyes of knowledge and desired goals. Edgar Schon who studied and wrote much on reflection described two main ways of reflecting, one whilst in action and one whilst after the event has occurred. Reflection in action allows the practitioner to evaluate and change what he/she is doing whilst they are doing it, highly effective but many do not possess the skill to do this. Reflection on action is as described above where one contemplates in retrospect.

This essay will explore the significance of IP education and how this will lead to successful IP working. It will focus on personal IP education and from personal practical experience in placements and reflect on how to improve IP collaboration in the future. Finally I will identify a barrier to IP working and what changes could be made to make IP working more effective. Since 2004 it has been a requirement that pre-registration health and social care students in England must receive IP education opportunities. The main objective for this is to guarantee students: “…learn with, from and about each other…to aid collaboration in practice” (CAIPE, 1997).
It will attempt to define what being a reflective teacher means, whether it is a worthwhile exercise to pursue and in practical terms, how it can be achieved. It will look at a number of different models of reflective practice put forward by educational theorists and the degree of their success. As with any model, it can only be tested on real evidence and this will be taken from my portfolio of work from my NQT year and to a lesser degree from ITT training practice. I hope to prove that being a reflective practitioner is worthwhile to your personal and teaching development, once you can establish the model and practical methodology that works within your own teaching philosophy. Before applying the theory of reflective practice to my experiences, it is important to understand what this “abstract” (Watson & Wilcox, 2000, p.58) idea means to me in my own teaching context and development.
