Reducing Poverty In America Delmar A Bennett Buffalo State College Abstract In this essay I will briefly demonstrate how poverty impacts the United States. My main focus is to discuss the reasons behind poverty in the States. After gathering research I came to the conclusion that poverty arises due to the lack of education. The United States is in an era were poverty is becoming a big epic. We live in the richest nation yet nearly 49 million of Americans struggle to put food on their table. Poverty by definition is the state of people not being able to pay for their daily needs. Arthur O. Eve is a good example of a community changer. He is a member of the New York state assembly and also a deputy speaker of the assembly representing districts in Buffalo, New York. He graduated with a bachelor’s from the University of West Virginia and started a program called EOP (Educational Opportunity Program). The purpose of the program is to provide services and funds to New York state residents who are academically and economic challenge. The program gives them the opportunity to attend a postsecondary educational institution. According to college development program, EOP students graduate at a rate 6.5% greater than the national graduation rate for all students. EOP benefits all of New York State, not just those who participate. As greater numbers of academically and economically disadvantaged students are educated, the potential workforce for the future grows and stabilizes. The United States poverty rate is higher than ever. Over the past year, the poverty rate has being bouncing back and forth between 12 and 15 percent. It seems to me that the government shows a lot more interest in the United States defense systems rather than focusing on ways to reduce poverty. I came to the conclusion that we should reduce military expenses and spend more money on education. The government tends to spend billions of dollars on battle ships and fighter jets. Instead of spending money on beneficial aspects such as after school programs, and allow teachers to further their education. With proven facts, we have seen how effective a good education system can be. Massachusetts and Mississippi was a good comparison showing the difference between a strong education system and a very weak one. In Mississippi there was a higher poverty rate with more than half of the black and Hispanic population living below the poverty line. Mississippi struggle to maintain a stable schooling system, and Massachusetts excelled in theirs. Students ACT scores are above average. According to College Board Average lifetime earnings for individuals with associate degrees are almost 25 percent higher than average lifetime earnings for high school graduates. We cannot go wrong if we invest more money in our academic system; the more educated people, the more productive society will be, and more efficient for the next generation.
