Cruzado Minor Paper 2 October 3, 2012 The Realm of Feminism The analysis of the two stories, Memoirs of a Geisha and Summer Solstice, reveal elements within the female characters conforming the feminist approach that the authors have purposely brought up. The stories tell about women’s experiences as well as their viewpoints distinct to the thinking of men; this could be drawn from each of the two main female characters Sayuri and Doña Lupe. To analyze the appeal of feminism in each story, the two main characters were examined based on their dominant characteristics and unique ways of how they deal with the other characters. The main character of Memoirs of a Geisha, Sayuri, could be described as a girl who was imaginative and had been full of dreams. She had been through many tough situations in life just to fulfill the dream of being a geisha. Sayuri is an imaginative girl. Out of those images she wanted to put into reality, she created dreams and goals to achieve. The chairman is her main source of inspiration wherein from just being a slave, she started to like what she had tried to escape from – to be a geisha. Part of this characteristic of her is the part where she wanted to level herself up like that's of geishas. She thought that being a geisha could be an escaping door from her poverty and slavery although it wasn't the main reason why she came up with this dream. Mameha had a big role in Sayuri's ignited dreams. She was the one who brought to light the bright sides of being a geisha. Being one requires great training and gift in arts. Not everybody nor anybody could easily get on the task of dancing and showing off fancy movements to entertain and get people. That is the difference Sayuri wanted to show from her.
