It taps into some of our most basic psychological needs such as the need to belong and connect with others, the need to meet human needs, to affiliate; and to gain a social identity (Myers, D.G., 2009, p. 38). I loosely define reality television (tv) as programming that presents the public with so-called unscripted dramatic or humorous situations, documenting actual events, and more widely featuring ordinary people rather than professional actors. As human beings, we are motivated to act in ways and make choices that are effective in achieving our goals. It can be assumed that one would want to make accurate decisions that will lead us in the right direction. One common definition of motivation is the "physiological and psychological factors that account for the arousal (energizing), direction, and persistence of behavior" (Davis & Palladino, 2007, p. 231). The word motivation is derived from the Latin word meaning "to move." In short, motivation can be viewed as the power that initiates and guides behavior; why we do what we do. In this paper, I intend to explore the phenomenon of reality tv and the motivation that drives it according to Abraham Maslow’s (1908-1970) Hierarchy of Needs. I hope to gain a better understanding of the people on the television, as well as those who support this billion dollar industry.
