Reaction Paper From my understanding, Rosenberg’s “technological convergence” is a technological innovation or solution to helo solve problems which are common to the wide range of products that are unrelated on the nature and sues, but related on the technological basis. Technological convergence must be promotion of development of new techniques and intensive degree of specialization. Once new techniques and skills were developed through specialization in the machine tool industry, machine tool industry would become a main transmission center for the transfer of new techniques and skills to the entire machine--using sector of the economy. Firearms, sewing machines and bicycle industry are three major examples that Rosenberg used to interpret the function and consequences of “technological convergence”. For the development of firearms industry, Thomas Blanchard’s stocking lathe for the shaping of gunstocks was a transitional innovation to replace the tedious and time-consuming hand techniques of shaping the gunstocks by whittling, boring and chiseling. The principle embodied in the machine was quickly applied to such sundry items as hat blocks, handles, spokes of wheelers, sculptured busts, oars, and shoe lasts. As similar process as firearms, the solution of technical problems in sewing--machine production resulted in major addition to the stock of machine--cutting instruments, were applied to the production of other metal--using products. The most important innovation in the sewing--machine industry were products of the Brown and Sharpe Manufacturing Company. As this company continuously innovate and specialize their products, its innovation and new techniques are far surpassing the industry of origin.Brown and Sharpe’s universal milling machine was initially developed as a solution to a narrow and specific range of problems and which eventually had enormous
