Rainbow Street, which is officially known as Abu Baker Al-Siddeeq Street, is a historic area in Jabal Amman, and next to the downtown. It is lined with shops and boutiques, cultural centers, libraries, research centers, religious buildings and a cinema were the street was named after. It lies in central location between east and west Amman, and is near to the down town area. Jabal Amman was first settled during the Neolithic period. In the 20th century, when Amman was declared the capital of Transjordan and royalty, wealthy families, businesses, army offices, and politicians began moving to Jabal Amman. As Amman spread west, the first circle was built, right next to Rainbow Street. The street is one of Amman’s oldest residential neighbourhoods. It represents the evolution of architecture in the city. Two of the most attractive villas in the area that were built in the late 1920s are: - An elegant symmetrical villa faced in local stone, with a stepped porch and tall, slender windows. - A one-storey villa with pointed arches and wrought iron bars, and a garden centred in a star-shaped fountain. Rainbow Street rehabilitation project was initiated by Greater Amman Municipality (GAM). The budget for this project was around 2 million JDs. Their objective was to activate the tourist and commercial movement through creating more public spaces that are more pedestrian friendly, while at the same time conserving Amman’s distinctive heritage. The project took 8 months of working, starting from April, 2007, and ending on November. They paved the streets with basalt tiles, rearranged the shops’ front sides, planted trees, and added parking plots, sitting areas, stops at beautiful sights of Down Town, sculptures and some landscape design.
