R.G. LETOURNEAU Born on November 30, 1888, to Caleb t. and Elizabeth LeTourneau, Robert Gilmore was sent with a great life a head of him. Growing up in a strong Christian household, his parents faithfully prayed for his salvation. As a child, Robert felt church or school wasn’t the right place for him. At the age of twelve he realized his gift of building machines. He built a snow plow to replace him having to open paths with a shovel. At the age of fourteen Robert dropped out of school. He went straight into work, shoveling sand and dirt. Of course he also wanted to find an easier way to perform this task. As Rick Williams (2002) noted in Business Lessons From History – R.G. Almost at once she fell in love. When she turned seventeen he asked for her hand.” Since Roberts father did not support this, they did what they felt was right, they eloped to Tijuana. Being a young couple wasn’t easy, they often did without. After the death of their infant son, they had a prayer meeting at their home and it drew the couple closer to God. They soon began tithing and becoming fully faithful to the Lord. At one time, Robert took his personal salary and gave it to Christian endeavors. He also gave his time to Christian businesses and Christians colleges. Evelyn was always one step behind her husband and supported him with all he did. Even after having five children of her own, she always found time to help out with the young men who worked for Robert; making sure they had hot meals and places to sleep to keep them out of trouble. According to Mr. LeTourneau in his autobiography Mover of Men and Mountains (1967), On May 30, 1937, my wife and I, together with our company quartet, were driving to Greensville, South Carolina, to Bob Jones College. Peter Rutschman was at the wheel. The driver of the speeding car ahead of us turned his head to speak to the woman in the back seat. In 1961 LeTourneau Technical Institute became a co-ed college. The school now offered bachelor’s degrees in engineering, technology, arts, and science. In 1962, Richard LeTourneau (the couple’s oldest son) led the school along side Allen Tyler. In 1989, LeTourneau College became LeTourneau University. There are now many educational centers in Houston, Dallas, Tyler, Austin, and Bedford that offer programs in business and education. Named one of America’s top Christian Colleges/Universities, 1,316 is the average number of undergraduates who attend the campus in Longview, Texas.
