People communicate to express their needs and desires and understand and be understood and it allows us to understand and predict the behaviours of others and aids us to make decisions and solve problems. We communicate to meet the needs of others and also ourselves. Effective communication is vital in the work setting as we communicate with a variety of people and we need to ensure we pass on information and listen actively to be able to meet the needs of service users and staff. We have to communicate well with colleagues to ensure the smooth running of things, to make sure information is handed over clearly and to avoid confusion and allow continuity of care and minimise risk.

People also communicate in order to establish and maintain relationships with others, to give and receive information and instructions, to understand and be understood, to share opinions, knowledge, feelings, emotions, to give encouragement and show others they are valued.
Effective written and verbal communication and being able to use a variety of interpersonal techniques promotes strong working relationships which will then lead to a good quality care for my service users. With service users I initially need to establish a service users ability, needs and preferences in relation to communication needs and develop a plan of action to provide appropriate support that meets the service users communication needs and methods. The assessment involves observation questions and regarding information on a number of areas including ways and their preference of communication by service users which support process of completing the service users person centred plans. Any changes to service users’ needs need to be recognized and care plans changed to support the changes. When conversing with service users I ensure I speak in an informal relaxed way I
The key responsibilities of a team leader are: Providing structure for the team - This is associated to setting a clear vision to provide purpose, clarify roles and responsibilities, allocate tasks and set objectives. A leader can influence the team to perform their duties by explaining the vision and the importance of their role in the outcome, along with the steps or goals, needed to achieve it. The individuals will be more apt to follow if they can envision their contribution to the bigger picture. Without that perspective the team cannot accomplish its goal. Managing Time- A leader should be able to identify and differentiate between urgent and important issues.
In this Essay, I will be demonstrating my understanding of the communication skills that social workers need to develop and use to meet the needs of service users. I will identify strengths and weaknesses from the case study in relation to communication and will discuss how they can be improved. I will also identify knowledge and theories that was or could have been used to inform practice. This TMA will reflect mainly on the case study of Roy and how the social worker Rosie worked in assessing the needs of the service user Roy. It will also show that I reflect on my experiences of using knowledge and skills and how they have helped my own social work practice.
