These statistics add credibility to the link between drugs and robbery (Chris E McGoey). Having these statistics helps us better evaluate the pros and cons of this Bill. Since the Bill proposes to double the sentence of those arrested for armed robbery, it is important that we look at the additional cost for the taxpayer. The cost of housing an offender for one year can run from $2300 to $3200 depending on where they are being housed. Medical expenses cannot be pre-determined, but usually can be calculated at about
the Judge then sets forth an ultimatum; Stand in the town center and endure a public whipping, or report to jail for the next year. My hypothesis to this idea would be that most if not all criminals would choose to suffer a beating over being locked away in a jail cell. Therefore I believe more petty crimes would be committed, due to a lack of fear. A few days of pain can be far less detrimental than a long prison sentence. A reputable assumption Jacoby made was; Prison becomes a kind of
One of the major points against gun control is the violation of your second amendment rights, you have the right to keep and bear arms for personal protection. This paper will show there is no common sense in banning all firearms as a means gun control and it leaves law abiding citizens increasingly vulnerable to violent crimes. No Common Sense in Gun Control Over the past forty years, legislators have spent a lot of time, effort and revenue on legislation regarding gun control. Gun control advocates insist that increased gun control will lower the soaring crime rates of the early 70's. However, “recent research on the prevalence of defensive gun use has prompted growing concern that government efforts to regulate gun ownership and use may be counterproductive” (Ludwig, 2000, p. 363).
Politicians have stated thy will introduce new laws wanting tougher background checks, forced registration, and outright banning of military looking firearms. All these types of new laws will cut down on crime and make this country a safer place. But I believe the way to protect against a bad person with a gun is a good person with a gun. First of all on the issue of it will cut down on violent crime, who are they kidding criminals rarely obey laws; studies show most criminals acquire guns through friends or theft. Adam Lanza the shooter at Newtown stole the guns he used from his mother.
Prison Term Policy recommendation Proposal CJA/314 04/25/12 Mr. Hewitt Prison Term Policy Recommendation Proposal As the criminologist advisor to a member of the Georgia State legislature, I was chosen to do research for the bill that would double the maximum prison term for anyone convicted of arm robbery. My boss knows it a popular bill but have concern whether it is a good one. My job is to make some recommendation in regards to if the bill is passed will it be beneficial to everyone in of Georgia. “The prison term policies are sentencing guidelines that are created by Congress and the State Legislature to provide judges with bases for sentencing those individuals found guilty of committing a crime to ensure that each person is treated equal without discrimination” (Sentencing guidelines, 2010). According, to the Uniform Crime Reporting Program it list these offenses robbery, forcible rape, and murder etc.
Privatization of the Prison System Dustin Matthews Park University Privatization of the Prison System Introduction Our criminal justice system consists of many components that are necessary to keep our communities safe and distribute proper punishment of criminal offenders to include confinement. Perhaps the most scrutinized component of our criminal justice system is the corrections phase. Over recent decades the correctional system has experienced an astronomical increase in inmate population. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, as of 2010, the nation’s inmate population is well over 2.2 million and continues to rise. This enormous population has created severe prison overcrowding as well as an ever increasing financial burden on federal, state, and local governments.
Amongst all the stories swirling around in the media following the Sandy Hook tragedy it may surprise one to discover that handguns, not assault weapons, are used in most of the gun murders in the United States. Despite this many in Congress are pushing to bring back the Clinton-era ban with some extra restrictions and requirements. Although I can understand how frustration and grief following such horrific events can push people to call for action, I do not think that banning certain types of semi-automatic rifles or limiting their magazine capacity will do anything to stem the tide of death. The first hurdle that politicians seeking a new assault weapon ban will have to face is defining what exactly an assault weapon is. Most of the time
Non-violent crimes should just be a punishable fine because it saves money for the United States and the federal prisons in the United States. Non-violent crimes in America are rising rapidly and non-violent criminals are being sent to federal prisons or jails for a stupid reason. Like for an example many people are being arrested and sent to prison for selling drugs now how is this a violent crime? Drugs are illegal in America but it’s not really hurting our country right now. The main thing that is hurting our country right now is violence, when you read the news about Chicago they had more murders then the soldiers in Iraq due to gang violence.
Name: Institution: Course: Tutor: Date of submission: 3 Strikes Law Three Strikes Laws are acts that are passed by state governments in the U.S. It gives mandates to state courts to give life sentences to persons convicted of three or more severe criminal offenses. These acts became popular in the 1990s. Its intent is to ensure that there are longer prison sentences and bigger punishment for those committing felonies and those formerly convicted of severe offenses. It is aimed at the criminals who are not deterred by imprisonment and those who are not open to rehabilitation efforts.
√The financial and societal savings of providing an inmate higher education are enormous. Upon an inmate’s release, the cost-benefit of reducing recidivism will begin to be realized immediately. If we consider the additional benefit of this individual obtaining work, paying taxes, and contributing to the general economy, and the prevention of costs to victims of crime and the criminal justice system the benefits are significantly greater (Sherman). √The educational level of a parent is a clear predictor of both the educational achievements of a child and the level of a parental involvement in a child’s education. As the majority of prisoners are parents, the education of adults in prison can have a positive and long-lasting impact upon the lives of their children (Brown).
