Prison Term Policy Recommendation In the past decade many states have reviewed current laws governing prison term policy for individuals convicted of armed robbery. State and local legislators felt that a need to double the prison term would deter future crime from being perpetrated. Although many civic leaders throughout the criminal justice and penal system support the measure, is their sufficient and conclusive data to support such measure. According to "The Free Dictionary.com" (2012), Armed robbery is defined as, the taking of money or goods in the possession of another, from his or her person or immediate presence, by force or intimidation. The goal of the bill is to increase the prison term for those who commit an act of robbery while in the possession of a deadly weapon. The bill will not mandate proof of use, only that the individual was in possession of a deadly weapon at the time the crime was committed. There are pros and cons to the bill that must be reviewed and or addressed prior to its passing. On that note, the city of Nashville, TN proposed a similar bill however it failed to pass legislations as a result of a last minute amendment proposal that included lesser crimes being included…show more content…
As a result of incarcerating criminals for lesser or minor crimes, inmate population numbers have risen sharply and thus have impacted current facility operations funding via taxpayer dollars. Another impact to funding is that if the bill passes it will add to the already rising population and cost levels to support and maintain future and current facilities. Although the bill is popular throughout the communities, it can be used as a political tool to gain voter support during election years.
