CIVIL LIBERTIES ON THE DEFENSE Alex Gonzalez Federal Government-2305-p33 July 19, 2013 Every person is born with inalienable rights. These rights may differ from culture to culture; nonetheless, United States of America provides us with our own similar rights called Civil liberties. Written on our constitution are the words, our founding fathers, built this country upon. Expressed on the constitution is the expansion of our civil liberties in the form of the bill of rights. There are many amendments, though two specifically come to mind that are of great importance to our civil liberties. This amendment protects the people’s and individuals natural right to defend oneself by allowing citizens to carry legally with them a firearm. For example, if a person is being chased and hunted then that person’s natural rights to defend themselves from endangerment now applies, in which he or she can hurt the predator in order to save their life. However, when it comes to the Second Amendment, I believe it serves a greater purpose than just saving the self. The purpose, referred to, is to protect the people from government, military, or group so powerful that wants to enforce its will on the defenseless people. The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.[1] With the second amendment allowing the common citizen the right to bear guns, one can legally apply and obtain a license to carry with them these weapons. Thus, the common people are armed awarding them with the ability of fighting chance against possible tyranny. Of Course, the idea of our American government committing such horrible, imposing, and unwanted acts on its people and the people actually forming a militia and treason to fight back sounds ridiculous in today’s reality; it does not mean it will never happened. After all, where would the United States be today without the original colonies arming themselves, forming militia, and performing a bit of treason. For these reasons I believe the people of the United States should always carry the right to bear arms, because it is essential to protecting and defending ourselves whether from other individuals or strong power entities even our own
