Promoting Interdisciplinary Care In order to provide Mrs. R. with the proper education and prenatal care Mrs. W. must delegate educational opportunities to the team on staff at the clinic. To begin you need set up a meeting with Mrs. W. to discuss the case and delegation. As a new supervisor you must establish a rapport with Mrs. W. so that a productive conversation can be accomplished. Since this is the beginning of your role as supervisor it is good to begin with a staff meeting that introduces you and your expectations to your staff. At this meeting once issues such as budgeting and marketing are discussed, an open forum would be introduced. In this type of discussion the staff is free to introduce themselves and discuss a few ideas they think might benefit the clinic. Sometimes with a change of management it is best to include your team members in brainstorming to get fresh perspectives and see where their strengths and weaknesses are. At this time you, as supervisor, can discuss team work and delegation, therefore making it a team effort. In order to monitor what works and what doesn’t work the team can expect periodic monitoring to assist with any changes that are made (Martin 2012). Mrs. R. is a developmentally delayed person, 30 weeks pregnant and lives with her boyfriend who is currently working two jobs. As you both review Mrs. R.s’ issues you note that she has missed several appointments and is often late when she does make an appointment. Appointment cards are given to each patient but they are in English. Mrs. R. will need to be provided with her appointment information in her primary language. Mrs. R. has also missed several pertinent tests that need to be completed during the second trimester. Because possible language barriers and cognitive issues you suggest that the social worker be contacted and be made available when Mrs. R has her appointments. She is bilingual and speaks fluent Spanish. It is also noted that the social worker will be working with the other disciplines on this patient to ensure accurate communication.
