Abortion Abortion is the termination of a foetus during pregnancy. It became legal in the UK in 1967, before this backstreet abortions were carried out by unqualified people. Backstreet abortion is the termination of an unintended pregnancy carried out by people lacking the necessary skills, or in an environment lacking the minimal medical standards. Most unsafe abortion is carried out in places were abortion is illegal. Backstreet abortion isn’t as common as it used to be but still goes on. There are a number of different methods of abortion. The type depends on how many weeks pregnant the woman is. The types of abortion are RU-486 where a drug/hormone is injected in the early stage of pregnancy to stop the embryo attaching to the womb. People who support Pro-Life argue that even though the foetus is still inside the mother it still has rights. They believe live begins at conception therefore abortion is murder. Also doctors and nurses jobs are to save life not to end it. Also religious people believe that every child is a precious gift from god and people have no right to destroy it. Children with physical or learning disabilities can also lead full and rewarding lives, aborting people because of disability is like telling disabled people that they are worthless. Also that abortion isn’t the only option for unwanted children they could be put up for adoption. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child says that children need protection both before and after birth as they can’t stand up for their own rights. Pro-Lifers believe that abortion is the worst type of child abuse.
