PRIVATE SECURITY vs PUBLIC POLICE Since September 11, 2001, the word security has taken on a new meaning and unprecedented importance to most Americans. Private security is a multifaceted industry that has made great advances since the day of the lone watchman or the single guard in a guardhouse. The variety of functions performed by private security guards and the vast array of security equipment and procedures in the past decades offer the potential for more security than ever before PRIVATE SECURITY AND PUBLIC POLICE SIMILARITIES Although private security and public police don’t share many similarities, the main purpose of the two is to protect the public and its property while maintaining order. Security guards and police officers work to uphold the same laws and must act in accordance with the publics rights at all times. Like police officers, private security guards can investigate on behalf of their employer. When it comes to witness testimony both private security and public police give testimony about the investigations. Although they both train for their position, private security is not required to go thru the intense training like public police. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PRIVATE SECURITY AND PUBLIC POLICE Despite both private security protection and public police resources being engaged in a broadly similar enterprise, differences of focus and style exist between the two. Private security is primarily occupied in securing physical and electronic assets, criminal and other threats, while police address a wider range of assets in addition to property, such as public peace, the criminal law, and road safety. Private security guards are usually hired by security companies or specific place of businesses, while public police work for the government.
