Being malnourished can be classed as physical abuse. Signs/symptoms: Signs of physical abuse can be injuries such as bruises, cuts and burns. These abuse injuries are usually in easily hidden places that cant be seen, they are unexplained and can go untreated to avoid being found. Physical injuries that are being inflicted over a period time are often in different stages of healing. Weight loss and unkempt appearance can be signs of abuse.
Eg stealing or borrowing money from a confused individual or withholding pension or cheques from an individual. Emotional and psychological abuse: Emotional and psychological abuse is when physical abuse is being made or even threats these can have a big impact. Being bullied or stereotyping can be emotional and can affect self-esteem anything that affects dignity or self-worth is abuse signs and symptoms can vary from unpredictable behaviour or ignoring and secluding themselves from people, denial of being abused and blaming themselves. Or even aggression. Financial Abuse Financial abuse is when an individual steals from you or restricts your access to you on money/accounts or pensions signs and symptoms could include money going missing around the house or even from your bank. Bank details changing or being unable to make payment.
Institutional abuse – Individuals are mistreated due to poor practise of a company, this could include understaffing and neglect etc. Self-neglect - Where an individual ignores or pays less attention than necessary to their basic human needs for food, drink, warmth, sleep etc Neglect by others – This includes ignoring medical, physical, educational needs or denying access to things like food, drink and warmth. This could also include failure to provide adequate support 1.2 Identify the signs and/or symptoms associated with each type of abuse Signs and Symptoms of Physical Abuse – This would include unexplained injuries/bruises/cuts/bite marks. Institutional Abuse Is the mistreatment of people brought about by poor or inadequate care or support, or systematic poor practice that effects the whole setting. This mainly occurs when the individual’s wishes and needs are sacrificed for the smooth running of the home. This can happen in several ways lack of person centred care, no flexibility in bed times, lack of personal clothing or possessions, lack of choice in food or menus.
