This assignment will be looking at the patterns of health and illness amongst the social groups of gender, age, ethnicity, location and social class, in order to identify if there are links between social groups and a population’s state of health/ill health. Women are more likely to develop a cognitive health disorder compared to men. According to The Guardian (2013), ‘women are approximately 75% more likely than men to report recently having suffered from depression, and around 60% more likely to report an anxiety disorder.’ Arguably, this may be because women perform a ‘triple shift’- going to work in the day and coming home to perform domestic work & emotional work; listening to their partner talk about their day & offering them emotional support. This in turn can lead them to becoming depressed, as they have to take on the problems of their partners, as well as their own problems, and feeling like there is no-one else to talk to. Additionally, these figures may be this high, due to women being more likely to go to the doctor when there is something wrong with their health, whereas men will put off going to the doctors.
Women have not modified their smoking habits as much as men have. In 1994 there was a 24% drop in smoking in males compared to 15% in women. There has been an increase in female admissions to alcohol rehabilitation clinics. This could be due to more female alcoholics or a decrease in the stigma associated with these clinics. However, more men drink to medically dangerous levels than females.
She did this with 651 participants of varying age. Two minutes later the participants were stopped again and asked to recall the physical characteristics of the woman. All age groups performed similarly but younger age groups were significantly more confident in their recall, suggesting that perhaps it is older participants lack of confidence in recall which perhaps leads them to be easily influences by misleading information. However, it is not just the elderly who can be misled by inaccurate information therefore affecting the reality of the EWT, Robert and Lamb investigated interviews of 161 children who had filed in allegations of abuse. In 68 interviews, the researcher had distorted the child’s report or had added in misleading information.
Viewing this video of Dr. Martin Seligman has already positively impacted my life. Positive psychology is the opposite of what psychology is most widely known for. Positive psychology says that nothing is wrong, but it still can be better. Psychology is good because it has expanded human horizons of the mind. It has allowed for the development of a science of mental illness complete with measures, causation, classifications, psychological and pharmaceutical treatments, rigorous efficacy of treatments, decline in miserable people, and even the curing of mental diseases.
Finally she discusses the sounds of silence and how each gender responds to the other while communicating. Tannen finds in her research that men and women communicate differently from the time they are adolescents. She uses Eleanor Maccoby’s article from the April issue of American Psychologist as an example to show the difference in communication in boys and girls. Tannen states from Maccoby’s work, “Boys and girls tend to play with children of their own gender, and their sex-separate groups have different organizational structures and interactive norms.” (51). Here, Tannen is trying to help establish the fact that men and women have always communicated differently, ever since they were small children.
We need to continue to motivate others to think more positively in negative times. The use of positive self-talk it helps to inspire a better intellect of assertion and confidence. Positive self-talk is used to spark a positive trend that will ultimately replace all negativity. The use of positive talk is very motivating and inspirational for people and it can be used to dismantle the ties to genocide, terrorism, rape, famine and germ
Positive mental health includes the ability to understand and make sense of our surroundings, to be able to cope with change and to communicate effectively with other people. Mental health is therefore an essential component of our general health (Lester & Glasby 2010). It is however more difficult to define what is meant by mental illness. This is
Eustress in Life Not all stress is bad, in fact some of it is good, in comes eustress. Eustress is a term that is described to motivate people to continue moving forward and enjoy the actions and events that require some effort. In the end though, it provides a great deal of satisfaction. The term was first introduced by the endocrinologist Hans Selye, who wrote about the impact of stress on the mind and body. There are many stressful situations that can lead to anxiety, apathy, and depression.
Pregnant women face many barriers when trying to get help for their substance abuse problems. Many pregnant women seek out help through the community and treatment programs but find they are mainly male centered and do not cater to their personal needs. Other barriers they face are the fear of criminal prosecution and the fear of losing their current children to child protective services. Maternal substance abuse continues to be a growing problem today. Educating more mothers on the consequences of abusing substances while pregnant will help reduce the number of children affected by this significant problem.
Women’s fear comes mostly from their vulnerability to sexual aggression; women are ten times more likely to be sexually assaulted than are men (Crowell & Burgess, 1996). Women are born with this fear. Parents, peers and media reinforce fear toward women into thinking that they’re vulnerable for an attack if they go out alone at night. Another suggestion why women are more fearful is irrationality, great concern for their children which ignites fear and less control over public and private spaces than men (Gilchrist, et al. 1988).
