PSY/220- Positive and Negative Emotions
University of Phoenix Our Society lives off emotions every day, whether they are negative emotions or positive emotions it’s just part of who we are. It’s obvious that negative emotions lead to negative outcomes in life, but let’s focus on the positive emotions an understand some of the benefits from them. Positive emotions have so many benefits for starters positive emotions allow a person to open his or her thinking, it gives a person more creative ways to make good decisions in tough situations. (Positive Psychology Ch03: Positive Emotions and Well-Being, Pg.42) Positive emotions are also strongly connected to an individual’s wellbeing and ability to be resilient. There are times in life when we face difficulties maybe the loss of a loved one or a negative report by a doctor, having positive emotions can allow us to be optimistic about the situation and our future. It’s important that we have the ability to cope in certain situations and offset the negative emotion with positive emotions. If we can look at negative emotions as a downward spiral such as: fear, anger, stress, anxiety. Then look at positive emotions as an upward spiral such as: joy, love, happiness, and confidence we can then see how our positive emotions broadened our outlook on life, which leads to an overall better physical and mental health. The idea of negative emotions in our lives do change when we think of women and men. Researchers (Kessler et al., 1994; Nolen-Hoeksema, 1995;Nolen-Hoeksema & Rusting, 1999)
