Summary of “Are Colleges Worth the Price of Admission?” In the article, “Are Colleges Worth the Price of Admission?” by, Andrew Hacker and Claudia Drefius there are many suggestions on how to reform colleges to make the price of admission worth it to students attending. One idea stated in the article was engaging all students; “professors must make an effort to reach their students” (180). The authors are suggesting that instead of just teaching day to day curriculum they should pay attention to how all the students are performing. Another point stated was that colleges are not pushing their students minds. Instead of worrying about the pay off the students should be concerned with developing all they can intellectually.
Injustice is basically when somebody has been wronged and when adding collector is when somebody has been wronged many times over their life. Society in my opinion cannot protect themselves against these types of people because we have no way of knowing who they are. For all we know our teachers or best friend could be just like Cho, but we will never know until they lash out. The only possible way would to mandate a law requiring everybody to never wrong anybody in the world, which as we all know could not be
It is the home of the free and land of the brave. Yet it seems since these attacks, America has repeatedly failed many of our citizens by not protecting them or them being falsely accused. We must realize that there is a greater picture here. If we are so willing to stray from the rules and laws our country is built upon, doesn’t that make us closer to a bigger evil- the dissolution of our nation and government? Quite frankly, that terrifies me.
The second poem “Shine, Perishing Republic” by Robinson Jeffers mostly resembles my attitude towards America right now. I do believe that the government is trying to do anything possible to gain more power even if it means ruining or destroying the environment and society. I feel like the government pretends to actually care about our well-being but we're brainwashed to actually think that. I really don't understand how people can actually do whatever it is they want to do even if it isn't right just to make themselves happy and to have a good time. This era is actually really messed up, it seems like there isn't any structure with our society that everyone is just going with the flow of what's “in”.
Another thing that makes assimilation bad is the fact that people use it so much that they don’t see that it could be a danger in the future. Many people lose their history, traditional inhabits, and national culture, national spirit and therefore small nations can disappear. People don’t realize that assimilation not only hurts them but it affects the future generations and nations that could vanish if everyone decides to change their customs. One of the beautiful things of this world is how diverse and different everyone is. If we were to live in a world where everyone was the same it would be boring and dull.
Ungar author of “The New Liberal Arts” who believes liberal arts is necessary for high school and college students, he argues that liberal arts sets the stage for the future and what jobs will soon anticipate when looking for an employee. Although I agree with liberal arts being taught to elementary and middle school students, I cannot accept the fact that Murray believes liberal arts should end with the eighth grade, why should learning ever stop, knowledge is power and students should continue to learn until they are not able to learn
Several paradoxes existed, and could be argued to still exist, but the most significant one as indicated by the document itself was that the students were “imbued with urgency, yet the message of [the American] society [was] that there [was] no viable alternative to the present.” How were they supposed to draw attention to matters that others had deemed insignificant or obsolete? The challenge to overcoming this paradox was solved by breaking down the naivety of the mass populous and creating a society that questioned and strived for more for themselves and others. This lack of control, attention, or interest directly affected the other paradoxes that existed in the students lives: the fact that America declares equality for all and yet marginalizes a group of people due to their race; the proclamations of peace by America in the Cold War while secretly fueling up for an arms race; the great and yet destructive potential of nuclear power; the image of the overwhelming wealth and influence of the United States and the lack of effort to facilitate that growth in other nations . These paradoxes, like the first one mentioned, are completely influential to a society, especially if they go unnoticed or unquestioned, because they seem daunting, even impossible, to overcome as a task. To me the main reason why luv is so misunderstood is because the word TRUTH doesn't play its part. It could be that u are not being TRUE to urself about the relationship. Or it could be that they are not telling u the TRUTH about how they really feel. Wuteva the situation is, people need to understand that when the Truth is told, the relationship will be exactly what u want it to be. Many times, people get scared of the truth and try to hide from it.
With new information being produced in today’s world we begin to create an ignorant society because no one gets the full truth, but society should have the right to pick what they want to see as well as gain more information on. Without getting the full truth from the information we receive from the media, society becomes ignorant because our reactions toward various groups of people start to change, and individuals start to make assumptions about others. The main reasons the government claims to have censorship is for profanity and whether is appropriate or not, but we are taught from a young age right and wrong and if one feels that what they are about to see is inappropriate for them they should turn off the television or shut down whatever they are on. ‘if your parents don’t want you seeing pornography on the web, they can install software to block suck items’ (Widdowson, 1997) Many would agree with this statement because it is true, if a parents isn’t ready for their child to see certain thing they can put barriers to block that information, they do not higher power to feed them half full information because that is not any better, the children will just become more ignorant by the second. Secondly when it comes to crime because everything is censored the news is pretty one sided, because in today’s society when it comes to crimes the media mostly focus on minority groups.
I. We have become a society that focuses so much on producing, and the end product that we have become so unaware of the means necessary to attain the end result. Suppressing our own judgment to think; that people have become so blind to their ignorance, and try to use “it must be done, to achieve a greater goal” as an excuse for being ignorant without even knowingly being ignorant. It has become a second nature of ours. How many people must be tested, how many tests must take place, and how much does someone endure for someone to object and say no.
