Stereotypes in Police based Movies If one was too watch enough movies on the same topic they might start to see some trends that coexist in multiple films. Is this something that the media is trying to purposely portray to the public or is it a mere coincidence? Does the media take certain stereotypes from different professions and base films around it, and if so is this why there tends to be the same types of characters lurking around multiple films. One profession that can be used as an example is Police. When observing the films; Superbad, Supertroopers, Training Day, 21 Jump Street, Date night, the town, American gangster, and Boondock saints, one starts to see many similarities between the characters. Taking the films mentioned previously, it can be easily proven that the media uses stereotypes to base their films on and not the other way around. The first stereotype that can be seen in police movies is the goofy, immature, or irresponsible officer. In superbad the police officers, played by Seth Rogan and Bill Hader, are extremely irresponsible and show it through their actions in multiple parts of the film. They start off by escorting an obvious minor around with alcohol, using their siren to run red lights, and even drink on the job. The night then turns into a drinking binge with the teenager until they eventually crash their squad car and burn it with a maltov cocktail. In the next film supertroopers the same style of officer can be found through the shenanigans pulled by the highway patrol. They play various games with the citizens they pull over ranging from meowing like a cat, to repeating each other’s every line, and even pulling people over speeding away and reversing back.
