Police Roles and Functions (Week Two) According to S.M., & Katz, C.M. (2011) “There are just under 18,000 law enforcement agencies in the United States. This includes 12,766 local police departments, 3,067 sheriff’s departments, 49 state police agencies, 1,481 special police agencies, and 65 federal agencies.” This does not include the estimated 105,000 federal law enforcement personnel. This is a vast amount of police officers but not comparable to the 40.000 erroneously reported in the 1960’s. Today’s law enforcement agencies are compromised of multiple agencies consisting of local, state, federal, special district, tribal, and private law enforcement agencies.1,2 Each group listed has their own varying policies and procedures which they adhere to. Local agencies mostly comprised of municipal or county departments, mostly enforce local ordinances and some state laws within their perspective jurisdiction. Most county agencies are usually tasked with overseeing the correctional system as well, but not in all jurisdictions. The state level is usually comprised of State Police or Highway Patrol, crime labs, fish and wild life, liquor control boards, child protective services, and other similar investigative departments but each state will differ on how many departments they have and what they will investigate. The state agencies usually only investigate crimes in violation of state law or ordinances and in most cases cannot enforce the ordinances of municipal or county agencies. The federal agencies have the ability to enforce law within the entire United States and even in some foreign countries depending on the relations and agreements made. Federal law enforcement agencies consist of many different organizations such as the Department of Homeland Security, Transportation Security Administration, Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Federal Bureau of
