The main character and narrator of Gilman’s story was forced by her husband to stay in a room upstairs where she started to show many delusional signs and eventually went insane. In both of these short stories many similarities and differences are portrayed in the plot, characterization and symbolism. The main element that both women share is they were both controlled by a man to the point where they went insane. Both “The Yellow Wallpaper,” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and “A Rose for Emily,” by William Faulkner, have protagonists who are victims of both society and their family. Summary of works In the short story “A Rose for Emily’ the author uses many elements to show the impact towards the changes into modernity on rural culture and its identity, racism, gothic pervision, family history, family feuds, and family legacies.
A Grave Repercussion Emotions can be fatal when left to fester. Often, people’s feelings can cause their rationality to decay and drive them towards abnormal behavior. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Ophelia snaps under the heartache of her fathers’ death, forcing her into madness. Eventually, her anguish throws her into a grave with which she cannot escape. The grief she suffers is what leads to her derangement, and in turn, her own death.
He then blames two guards for the deed and becomes king of Scotland. Throughout the course of this play, Macbeth murders his best friend, Banquo, Macduffs entire family, and plots to kill more so he may keep his title. He becomes crazy with power and rants about the witches’ predictions daily. He becomes, in his eyes, immortal. On the other hand, his wife becomes so guilty for their deed she begins to sleepwalk and talk of their crime in the night.
Laertes wants to avenge the death of his father by killing Hamlet. The royal family is chaotic and disrupted. The final scene of Laertes and Hamlet's fight, and then finally the death of most characters, this is a scene of Chaos. Then compare this to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. In almost every sense, everything is ordered.

This character, Emily, is also the main character of the story. Emily faces many obstacles in her early life. These obstacles carry on through the early stage of her life and cause problems later in life. Emily could be characterized as crazy because she kept her father’s dead body, killed the man she loved, and slept with a dead body for the latter years of her life.
He realizes that the house is just as bad as Roderick’s health. Roderick lives in the mansion with his sister, Madeline, which is ill as well. They both die by killing each other. The narrator escapes and the house of Usher collapsed behind him. The dank tarn at his feet closed sullenly and silently over the fragments of the House of Usher.
Recurring thoughts of suicide, disconnect from society, a lack of motivation and the abuse of drugs and alcohol are also common symptoms of Clinical Depression. I heard many things in hell.” Through his denial of the hold lunacy has on him, the Narrator establishes the very nature of his madness. His contradictions’ such as denial of being afflicted by the disease, then the very next thought is to defend the nature of the illness by praising it for moulding his senses is evidence towards his increasing madness and the inevitable doom of the Narrator. The Mad Man’s seemingly unprovoked rage towards the Old Man is blamed upon his dead, hazy eye. The Narrator in a fit of Madness trying to explain his actions, claims his motivation; “One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture – a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold: and so by degrees – very gradually – I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” The Narrator again proves his madness through his apparent lack of solid intent coupled with his explanation of the rage within him.
I think the symbolic meaning of this painting is that Edvard was a very upset person. He had to deal with a lot of loss in his life. As explained in the private journals of Edvard Munch he was born in 1863. His mother died in 1868 of tuberculosis. In 1877 his sister, who he was very close to dies from the same thing.
