The masterpieces of Picasso and Theodore were epic works. Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and The Raft of the Medusa differ by the styles of such artists. Gericault's fine art contributed to the Romantic era, as Picasso's introduced Cubism. The Raft of the Medusa lacks any vibrant color which gives a dark emotion, unlike Les Demoiselles' color tones that distinguishes its background and angles. The energy depicted in the canvas of the Raft of the Medusa is the feeling of movement due to the dramatic poses contributed. Demoiselles' unpredictable pattern is the energy that animates the nude figures. The drawing of the human figures in a geometric version achieves unity by line drawing. It can be compared by the color and light defined forms seen on Theodore’s work as it relies on mostly on the use of shade. The depiction in Picasso’s work is meant to be seen as abstract imagery, as in The Raft of Medusa’s composition is constructed by two pyramid structures formed by the surviving people. One of the similarities of the two masterpieces is that they were highly criticized and produced controversy when first exposed. Depicting three dimensional spaces in a two dimensional picture plane. They both reflect harmonies and forms of impression found in ancient cultures. Their texture is similar since they are oil paintings. The application of paint to both canvas expresses the intensity, whether they’re loose or large brushstrokes. The great similarity in both is the variety they consist of. The Raft of the Medusa introduces variety in the illusion of movement as Picasso changes the lighting. The emphasis of the two paintings make the viewer focus on accents. The Greek Parthenon and the gothic cathedral of Chartres’ type of architecture differ, although the Greek’s classical design influenced the high gothic style.
