Safeguarding Here are some forms of abuse that people in care can use as a reminder for signs of any kind of abuse, PHYSICAL ABUSE Physical abuse is when another person inflicts pain by hitting, slapping, punching, kicking, chocking, strangling, stabbing, exposure to cold or to heat, withholding food or medication, anything that is or will result in pain to your body. If someone is trying to hurt you, intimidate, or humiliate you, it is abuse. Physical abuse is extremely dangerous as it can result in bruises, black eyes, knocked out teeth, broken bones internal injuries and even death. Signs to look for – ‘new best friends’, unpaid bills, unusual activity in bank account, belongings/property going missing INSTITUTIONAL ABUSE Institutional abuse can normally occur in a care home, nursing home, acute hospital. Institutional abuse usually occurs when the individual needs of somebody are being ignored in favor of procedures and routines, this could be having times when they have to go to bed or get up early when they don’t won’t to, just so it suits others, having to share clothes, toiletries and not having individual ones. Institutional abuse can also include the follow, neglect, and physical abuse, sexual, verbal, discriminatory, psychological, emotional and financial abuse. If an individual was to tell me they were being abused, i would follow the same procedures as I would with someone with full capacity. Some of the service users due to thee learning difficulties may say things that aren’t true, but everything about this is documented in there care plan and is risk assessed. How you can insure that any evidence of abuse is kept safe is to follow polices and procedures as any evidence is confidential you also need to follow the data protection act and keep all evidence locked away or safe. Different types of evidence could be photos, statements, any documentation or daily records. The national polices that set out requirements for safeguarding individuals are CQC (care quality commission) who set the standards that all care sectors need to abide to and if they don’t, CQC have the power to close that home down.
