Farquhar has the courage to contemplate burning the Owl Creek Bridge because there is no service "too humble for him to perform in aid of the South, no adventure too perilous for him to undertake" Farquhar as someone with courage, integrity and the ability to overcome any physical hardship. Peyton Farquhar. Farquhar shows extraordinary courage in three areas. We see his courage first when he stays in his home, even though an enemy army is only thirty miles away. Next we see his courage when he makes a one-man assault on the enemy. Finally we admire his courage in the way he faces his execution. The first time we are introduced to Farquhar s courage is in his decision not to flee when his home is so near to an advancing enemy army. After being warned that the enemy army is as near as the Owl Creek Bridge, Farquhar asks, How far is it to Owl Creek bridge? He is answered About thirty miles (Bierce 664). He is even told that there is no force on this side of the creek to stop this enemy (664). One might suppose that an ordinary response to this would be to take one s family and flee. Peyton Farquhar is not an ordinary man and his response is not to flee. Next we see Farquhar s courage by the response he does make. He asks, Suppose a man a civilian and student of hanging should elude the picket post and perhaps get the better of the sentinel what could he accomplish? (664). Amazingly, Farquhar is contemplating a solo raid on the enemy army. He imagines that he, by himself, might be able to burn the bridge that the enemy needs. Powers goes so far as to say that the hero of this story reveals a hidden aspect to his personality against the backdrop of a bridge (279). Powers is suggesting that the attack by Farquhar allows him to be the courageous hero that as a mere civilian he could never be. If it is an... leads a life of leisure.
