Systemic Writing Program Created and Copyrighted by Linda S. Giles Ed. D. on April 17, 2012 All Rights Reserved This program is a systematic way to teach students the foundations of writing. It is designed to teach the 5 paragraph essay for students in grades 4-8. The program includes a systematic pre-write and scaffolding materials to assist with differentiation in the following types of writing: narrative, informational, and persuasive. The program is designed to be taught in conjunction with a reading program that also focuses on comprehension. The terms used in writing should also be used in reading to comprehend corresponding literature. WHO: This term refers to the TOPIC of the writing piece. It may be a person, place, thing, or idea. It should only be a word or two. This is the focus of the writing piece and it should NOT change from paragraph to paragraph. WHAT: This term refers to the POINT of the writing piece. It should be why the person is writing about the WHO….it should answer WHAT is IMPORTANT about the WHO. The overall WHAT should be consistent throughout the writing piece. WHY/HOW: These terms vary depending on the type of writing piece, but they are the SUPPORT for your body graphs. These are also called your thesis points. Keep them separate from each other and general enough to allow for adequate supporting details for each. They each must be a support of the WHAT. They should change for each paragraph. Persuasive Writing Introduction Paragraph Prompt: Your principal is considering canceling recess for all students in grades 3-5 so children can spend more time in the classroom.
