In the last forty years there has been a heated debate about whether or not abortion is right. There are people who argue against the procedure saying that abortion takes away the rights of someone before they are born and have a life. Others believe that a woman should have the right to choose whether or not to have a baby. This essay will look at both sides of the argument and try to reach a conclusion as to what the correct moral stance is. The majority of the argument comes into play with the question of when life begins. Pro-life people suggest that life begins at the moment of conception; this is when the foetus begins its development in the womb of the mother. There are also people who are pro-choice; they believe that life begins from the moment of birth. This then gives the parents the option to kill their unwanted child. The legal limit to get an abortion in the UK is 24 weeks into the pregnancy. In 2010 there were 189,574 abortions performed in England and Wales, compared to 2011 which saw 189,931 abortions being performed giving a 2% increase. 146 abortions were continued to be carried out for women who were past the legal limit 24 weeks pregnant. They may have lost a child to an illness or accident and wish to become parents again. These are just some of the reasons why people would adopt.
